Has anybody been to Rome for Easter with kids?

We have two kids age 6 and 8 and are looking at a week in Rome for Easter. We’re not religious so will avoid the Vatican but would be interested in visiting historical sites and experiencing local culture and cuisine. Is this doable? Or does Rome come to a standstill at Easter?

I've been at Easter and it was fine - can be an expensive time to go though.

I’ve not been at Easter, I have been between Christmas and new year though and it was crazy busy.

Even if you’re not religious the Vatican is worth visiting. We did an art and faith tour and it was amazing! We heard the choir practicing in St Peter’s.

Thanks for your replies. We’re looking at the Pigneto area. Does anyone have any experience of this neighbourhood and proximity/ease of travel to city?

We are going this Easter with kids 12, 10 and 7. We are going 9th to 13th of April. Which is the first week of the easter hols but as easter sunday isnt until 21st we are gambling on it being quieter than actual easter week.

We were originally looking at May half term but thought it would be too hot. The flights on these April dates were actually cheaper than May half term.

We are planning to visit St Peters but not the Vatican museums.
Dont know the area you mentioned we are staying near the Vatican.

Rome is really, really hard on the feet so with youngish kids I would recommend staying out of the centre but really close to a Metro stop (or possibly a bus route but they are less reliable). Or stay right next to your highlights if you can. Don't be tempted by somewhere that's 'only' 15 minutes from the centre but not on public transport routes!

Avoid avoid avoid Easter week! It is thronged with religious pilgrims and you cant move.
