Thailand in August - recommend?

We want to go further afield this year for our summer holiday & really fancy Thailand as neither DH nor I have been before. We will have 3 DCs with us (ages 12, 10 & 8).

For those who have been before - anywhere you'd recommend / avoid? Anything that's particularly good to visit with DCs? TIA!

Not a great time of year for Thailand as sunshine not g/teed but it will be cheaper Wink

Thanks @binkybea - is it that bad? I was told east coast would be fine but avoid the west coast.

I've been going for the last 4 years to Thailand with 3 children every August and yes it rains but not that much and the worst we had was 2 years ago where it rained solidly all day otherwise it is short very sharp showers and certainty not enough to put us off! Going again this August

We have gone to Phuket several times and recommend Karon Beach as it is family friendly and also a beach resort on the mainland called Hua Hin where if you are worried about the weather it tends to be better. Koh Samui is amazing but very expensive but definitely the place to go to if you have the budget

We usually stop in Bangkok for a couple of nights and there is loads to do with kids

The Thais love children and are very accommodating with families and there are so many beach activities to do or fantastic places to visit you can easily fill 2 weeks or laze by the pool! I have always found the standard of 4* and above hotels to be amazing and far superior to what you'll get in Europe for a fraction on the price

That's brill, thank you @LennyLady !

We went to Koh Samui in August in 2017.
Very hot, no rain
Hated Bangkok plus the city was hotter than hell.

Really enjoyed Thailand, the people and food were amazing.

Been to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in August once with 3 dcs , who loved it...so much so that 2 dds have been back twice on their own as students as they love the culture , scenery and the food
Dh and I went to Koh Phangan last year and loved Koh Phangan, much less developed than Koh Samui and with some amazing beaches..definitely recommend a boat trip to the Marine National park at Angthong and a Thai cookery class
It is very hot and humid ....the east coast is better at this time of year as Monsoon rains don't reach there till October
Worked out cheaper going longhaul in August than many Mediterranean destinations!

Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao are best places to visit in August.

We are doing this with dc 12 and 10 in July..... Bangkok and Koh Samui - just need to book a hotel in Bangkok for 4 nights.....does anyone have any good recommendations? Did it bc and what a great country

We stayed at the Sheraton on the river.
Nice hotel but now knowing the geography of the place I would have preferred nearer the big shopping centre and cinema.
We seem to end up near there every day.
Shopping was so expensive in the shops.
Chatachak market was great. Very very hot but dead cheap.
We went to the Palace with our teens because it was too hot for them.
It was so hot the dye completely came out of my bra onto my white top. 😵

In Bangkok, sukhumvit is a good area to stay. Try and get close to a BTS station. We stayed on Soi 11 close to BTS Nana. Was perfect for us.

I live in Thailand. August is an unpredictable month. It could rain every day or only a big shower every few days. Is there another time you could go?

oldowlgirl · 19/02/2019 18:32

Thanks @mmgirish but it's too late now as we're booked Grin.

Does anyone know if we need vaccines (travelling from UK)? I've looked online & it appears not, but wanted to double check.

mmgirish · 20/02/2019 01:04

You should have vaccines. Call your GP and make an appointment with the practitioner who gives them out. They can tell you what to have. Have fun! Don't rent a moped!

oldowlgirl · 20/02/2019 13:11

Thanks!

We went in Aug 2018 and had no issues with the weather. Bangkok was warm but not too hot, and even cloudy on occasion. Chiang Mai was rainy one one day, fine the rest, and we visited an elephant sanctuary which the kids loved!! Koh Samui was perfect, sunny without being too hot.

We are limited to summer travel and would def go back to Thailand in July/August.

TheweewitchRoz · 02/05/2019 13:49

Sounds great, thanks @SheriffCallie
