European Lake Holiday Suggestions?

ritzbiscuits · 02/01/2019 15:11

I'm starting to look at summer holiday ideas for August, we're tied to school holidays.

We've visited Lake Como and Garda in Italy before, and are also fans of the UK Lake District.

Can anyone suggest alternative lake destinations in Europe - Maybe Austria, Germany, or a quieter lake in Italy? Probably self catering in a mobile home, apartment etc.

Ideally something that is not going to be mega busy. I'm put off returning to Lake Garda in August for this reason.

Thanks

We went last summer to the gorge du verdon in south east France, it was stunning. Lots of lovely lake beaches and pretty towns

Lake annecy in france, absolutely amazing

I found the lakes near Salzburg in Austria absolutely gorgeous, fairytale stunning, I think Hallstatt is the main town there.

PizzaPlanet · 04/01/2019 20:51

Lake Annecy is blimmin gorgeous!

shutlingsloe · 04/01/2019 20:53

Lake Orta is lovely.

Sallycinnamon1974 · 04/01/2019 22:06

We have been to lake Annevy twice and it’s fantastic. We stayed at La Ravoire campsite in one of their mobile homes and can highly recommend it.

Sickofthisalready · 05/01/2019 13:44

We've been to annecy three times and stayed in doussard, sevrier and this year lathuile. This year we stayed on a lovely campsite called les fontaines. Talloire is beautiful and has an brilliant lake beach. The lake itself is amazing.

Lake Annecy is lovely. Constance in Germany is also really nice, lots of very pretty old towns and things to do. Lake Geneva on the French side (Swiss side if you are a squillionaire). Having been to all three in August I think lake Geneva would be most quiet, then Constance, followed by Annecy which is absolutely mobbed in August.

I love Achensee is Austria as its right in the mountains too. About an hour from Innsbruck by train and you can sail on the lake, there is an old fashioned cog railway up from the plain too.

AgathaRaisinsCat · 05/01/2019 22:55

In Austria, not is Austria.

ritzbiscuits · 11/01/2019 10:18

Thanks so much for recommendations so far. I think we're honing in on Germany/Austria as we want a break from France this year.

Any further suggestions about German lakes (potentially flying into Munich), most appreciated.

Lake Titisee is small but very beautiful with a range of hotels and camp sites around it?

Constance on the German/Austrian side? Bregenz is a lovely town to visit?

Otherwise aside from the best lakes really are in Switzerland, but eating out and accommodation can be a bit more pricey.

FaFoutis · 11/01/2019 10:32

I think Konigssee is the prettiest around there, it's beautiful. I stayed at Ammersee which is nice but not spectacular, easy to get to Munich from though. The beaches you pay a small charge for tend to be not too busy in summer.

Impicciona · 11/01/2019 10:34

Lake Maggiore is gorgeous and not too touristy. It's close to Switzerland too.

JE17 · 11/01/2019 10:42

We spent a really enjoyable week in a small village near Bregenz by Lake Constance in the summer. There is so much to do in that area and it's beautiful. Busy but not ridiculous.

ifancyagreencard · 11/01/2019 10:42

We had am amazing week on Lake Titisee; such a beautiful area with plenty to see and do. We nipped into Switzerland to the Rheinfall, visited Freiburg and a great mountain with a cable car which I can't remember the name of! Lots of hotels, campsites and AirBnBs in around the lake area but you will, of course, pay a premium for lakeside accommodation. The lake is gorgeous but "refreshing"; DH took a photo of me going in from a pontoon and it's very obvious that the word I was framing at the time started with F Grin . . . .

Schauinsland?

Titisee is very pretty.

But I think I'd go to Lake Constance, loads to do. We flew to Zurich and stayed in Constance itself.

We are staying in Reberty (between Val Thorens and Les Menuires) for a week in Aug and want some ideas of where to go for the 2nd week - ideally no more than 2 hour drive away. Lake Annecy sounds great but being crowded in Aug puts me off. Be really grateful for any other ideas of locations where we could rent a gite/cottage. We have 2 teens. Many thanks

ZenNudist · 25/01/2020 10:04

I looked at ubersee on lake cheimsee about an hour from munich (cheap flights) and 50mins from Salzburg which im really looking forward to visiting.

Any lakes around Salzburg look lovely. Lots to do in the area: castles caves etc.

Daddylonglegs1965 · 25/01/2020 20:58

Not been but heard good things about Slovenia

ZenNudist · 25/01/2020 23:02

Lake bled in slovenia looks georgeous. I am not going in August when its uber busy. Saving it for may next year.

Ellmau · 25/01/2020 23:49

Lakes Bolsena and Trasimeno in Italy are both lovely.
