on places to stop off for refreshments. We are leaving Edinburgh at 5am tomorrow morning, driving north, north, north to get the ferry to Orkney (at 1pm - yes, we need our heads examined). I don't think there are really any service stations, but would love to hear if anyone knows of any cafes that might be open from 7am ish, don't mind driving off the A9 a little bit, will be worth it just to have place to give ds his brekkie. I will be awaiting responses with baited breath....!

Up the A9 and back again!!!

Just returned from our hols (wonderful Orkney!!), thought I would sneakily log on and see if anyone else replied - lots it would seem.

Thanks to you all for your helpful tips. I actually went with Seb1's original suggestion, the truckers cafe in Newtonmore which opens at 6.30am - perfect!! It is VERY rough and ready, very basic food, but the sun streams in the windows, they have high chairs, and my ds loved crawling around all the tables saying hello to the various scary, hairy, beardy wierdy truck drivers, who are a bunch of softies when a baby comes dribbling over to grin at them. No changing facilities, but lots of floorspace in the ladies loo.

I am definitely going to print off this thread for next trip north (Lochinver in August, yippee!!!) and try some of the other recommendations.

Isn't there something at Tomatin? Hmm, perhaps it was a Little Chef and they are all defunked now are they not? I used to play in a band and was up and down the A9 umpteen times, but the guy who I was with didn't eat properly so always stopped at the wee shoppie in Calvine because they did great penny sweets
