Hi,

I’m planning on going to Thailand in December next year for 2 weeks with the DCs.

We’ve been previously to Khao Lak and loved it because the beaches were empty (we went pretty far north) and it was very peaceful. Not many people around which was amazing! We also visited Khao Sok for the day; we absolutely loved the scenery, the wildlife and there were no crowds of people.

Can anyone recommend different places to visit / a different itinerary but where we can avoid the very touristy / busy areas.

Suggestions so far have been to go to Chiang Mai, followed by an island (but which one??).

Any recommedations would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Maybe Ko Chang or Koh Mak if you want quiet - it’s a 5-6 hour drive from BKK or you can fly to Trat which is close by.
Chiang Mai is very touristy/busy but it’s definitely worth a visit.

Depends how far you want to travel but Koh Lanta was the nicest/quietest island I went to when travelling Thailand.
Provision for tourist (great cooking school!) but not very busy or tourist-y.
Opposite side of Thailand to Koh lak/sok if my memory is right though!

Just had a quick look at the map and see it's on the same side as khao sok!

I’m in Thailand now, it’s rained solidly for 6 days. When it hasn’t rained we’ve had thunderstorms. Seriously fed up! Definitely put me off visiting this time of year. Koh Samui/ Phuket.

I’m in BKK and it hasn’t rained for weeks. It really depends where you are - the south has had a lot of rain, but that’s not totally unusual this time of year.

Hi Ruby- we are in Koh Samui -it is supposed to get better next couple of days.

Apparently monsoon season whichbis usually over by November came later this year! We have been before at this time of year and weather always great. Spectacular storm last night!

ruby1234 · 19/12/2018 08:28

ShalomJackie- yes, weather much better today!
Last nights thunderstorm was definitely a 10/10 in terms of rain, lightning and thunder. At least it stopped in time for us to go out for the evening. Hoping it continues to improve.....Smile

We had an amazing time in Chiang mai, and have promised ourselves we'll take the kids there when they're old enough. It is busy but spread out unlike the islands. We went on a brilliant trek in the mountains, I would really recommended it.
If your only going for two weeks it can be a pain to get from up north to the islands and depending on where you go, could take you a few days.

East coast is best in July/August and West coast is best at this time of year.
You couldn't pay me to get on a plane to Phuket in August. The runway is like a river.
