Recommend me a summer holiday for me and a teenager

I will be newly divorced. Just the two of us (13 year old).

Nowhere too hot in August but sunny and warm. We have done lots and lots of European cities, Nielsen etc in the past. I am not sure I will be able to stretch to Nielsen prices unless I leave it until the last minute and there are reductions.

I would like something with some sort of optional teen club or activity I think otherwise DD will be bored just the two of us.

But I want something fairly relaxed (but with things to do at the same time).

What's your budget? If you can find a suitable itinerary and price a cruise would be perfect, teenage club, they had a singles mixer too the last one we went on. Stop daily for sightseeing but if they want to stay on board one day they can. If you book nearer the time you can get bargains but you need some flexibility. I have half a dozen picked out and I'll hold out until early June and see if I can get at a cheaper price!

£2k max, realise it will probably only get me a seven day holiday. Definitely not a cruise, sorry, I couldn’t think of anything I would rather do less, ditto singles club, that is the last thing on my mind.

In similar sit. Have booked an apartment with pool on a Greek island which has separate rooms/bathrooms but shared living space but with breakfast delivered every morn. Nearby beaches and walks but all still quite chilled. DS does think he is 35tho so works for us!

Not sure if this will be over budget - about £3k for 2 weeks for 2 of you including flights, hotel, AI, activities and entertainment. Went to RUI Guanacaste in Costa Rica, around 25C everyday, amazing food - even kids got 3 course meals served to them incl 16oz steak. Saw raccoons, coati, gecko, pelican on site and monkeys down the road, sloths can be seen to on trips. On site lots of included activities SUP, canoeing, beach volleyball, pool, discos, windsurfing and its by rainforest. Next door has a place with a 60mph zipline a few hundred metres up, Diamante. Trips to zipline through rainforest, horseriding, hot springs, active volcanoes etc. Loads to keep a teen entertained. Both mine absolutely loved it though UK was very dull afterwards and I had complaints. 😎

In Europe TUI do Splashworld range with is AI with waterparks so plenty to keep teen entertained, quite competitively priced. One in Estival Park by Barcelona, obviously these are hot but can go to waterpark.

We are just diy it to Sweden and Norway, that requires car hire, but plenty of activities for that age towards the Bergen side of Norway in places like Voss and Eidfjord like white water rafting, white water jumping, rock climbing, high ropes, cable cars. Bergen itself is seriously expensive but you can rent a house for around £100 a night if go on Novosol and go bit out of Bergen more towards Eidfjord. We've got one with a motor boat. Flights are really cheap, Ryanair to Oslo. Daylight until around midnight.

Damn, you have ruled out a cruise. It is my teen's favourite type of holiday. Relaxing on sea days, sightseeing on port days. Other teens to hang out with if wanted. Total freedom whilst on board. Works fantastically for us.

Branleuse · 09/12/2018 11:28

what sort of things does she like?

Does she like history? Swimming? theme parks? museums? Art?

Toomanybaubles · 09/12/2018 11:36

Thanks all.

Doesn’t like theme parks, enjoys history, swims competitively, enjoyed Nielsen but didn’t want to go to kids club all day every day.

Definitely £2k max spend as I will have a lot of costs in 2019 (mainly legal bills).

That sounds nice Boo but I feel that we need something organised to tap into if necessary.

We did 2 weeks in Denmark and Sweden for 4 of us for less than 2 grand in August

Flew to Copenhagen. Rented a car then had a really nice cottage with a pool on Oland.

Cost us £40 each to fly STN CPH £240 for two weeks car hire and £700 for the cottage. Was the end of August so much cheaper as was last week of the Swedish school holidays. Then 60 a night in Copenegan for two nights.

Kids loved it.

It’s intresting that you’ve ruled out a cruise but are happy to go on Nielsen! On a Med cruise you are out everyday exploring somewhere new ( you don’t have to go the nearest city to port). Nielsen sounds way more holiday camp if that’s what you are thinking.
Mine hates kids clubs so no experience there. His favourite was a road trip across a Europe. Saw The Last Supper in Milian, Dachau concentration camp, stayed in Rome and Florence. Brilliant fun
However I’d seriously see if you could invite a friend/relation with kids and hire an Airbnb somewhere with a pool and beach.

Df takes her DC to eurocamp type places gets a 3 bed accommodation so they all have own space, teen activities are organised on site, they even go off to explore, with new friends, some sites for adult only spas and organised activities such as vineyard tours

What about a ski resort they have some good summer organised activities but options to relax in resorts too

Groovee · 31/12/2018 13:59

Budapest was reasonably cheap with lots to do for all the family x

Sarahandduck18 · 31/12/2018 14:03

Camping in Italy?

Bottomplasters · 31/12/2018 14:08

Road trip in Croatia would be good.

Fly to split, options to go to Montenegro and Bosnia. Loads of rich history.

Coast drive amazing. Easikynin budget last couple of weeks of August

lokijet · 31/12/2018 14:12

Gulet cruise in turkey - if you like swimming and snorkelling - my son and I did one through Explore but im sure there a lots of other companies that do similar.

SwedishEdith · 31/12/2018 14:12

This might not be available but somewhere like this? Camp site near Paris. Casual but she'll make friends plus trips to Paris and Versaille. Easy to drive to from UK.

mirage937 · 31/12/2018 19:56

we stayed at Camp Rambouillet a few years ago a lovely peaceful site but think youd have to leave site for most things, there was no organised activities on site or kids club even when we stayed in Mid August.

La Croix du Vieux Pont Campsite is a popular site with lots to on it and day trips possible to Disney and Paris, ive not been but heard a lot of good things about it, its not a long drive for Calais either

Amazonian27 · 04/01/2019 21:55

Sorry to hi-jack. SheWoreBlueVelvet - couple with two teen DC agree. Who did you cruise with, where did you go and how much did it work out please?

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 05/01/2019 13:29
