Driving in France....hotels in Cherbourg

Has anyone got any advice for a first time driver in France?

Also we are staying in Cherbourg overnight before getting the ferry back....anyone stayed in a decent mid-price hotel there?

For somewhere a wee bit different, try here - it's a hotel in an old semi ruined chateau and is only 20-30 minutes from the ferry terminals.

I stayed there YEARS ago, but still have fond memories.
