DH the boys and I went there yesterday as it's only an hour away from us and we've always fancied it. Plus a guy who was re fitting my mum's window locks (and took a day longer than he should to do it, then offered her his phone no. ) showed us some pics he'd taken there. One was the best pic of a ghosh/phantom we've ever seen!! He was still in shock bless him as he'd only downloaded them the day before. He noticed this shape and zoomed in to see this. It looked like a monk with a dark habit on.
So, we went yesterday armed with my digi camera. I felt so peaceful there but also v sad?? DS2 kept waving at the 'man' who wasn't there? Then as dh was getting in the car he went white and said he'd seen a dark figure quickly walking towards abbey. He dismissed it but I went to look and couldn't see anyone?
Dh bought a book whilst there called haunted heritage and in the rievaulx part it said some people are so overwhelmed with sadness they leave Dh was spooked when I said this to him as he'd read it.
On leaving we joined English heritage as we'll definitely be going back and there are lots of EH sites in the NE
