DH and I are planning to take DD (10) to NY Feb half term for a few days. Never been before and totally overwhelmed by choice and location of hotels. We have a fairly modest budget but want to stay in a hotel (or aparthotel) that's central so don't have to walk too far and is child friendly.

Trip Advisor seems to think that most Times Square hotels are rundown and overpriced.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

I definitely would not stay at Times Square. Midtown is good, we need to pick somewhere for April, flights booked.

We got a good deal on a room here in 2017, and really enjoyed it. Took breakfast elsewhere each day. Our two were 10 and 9 at the time, and we walked quite a bit. We found that taxi/uber was better value for a family than using the underground, and of course the yellow taxi is an experience anyway....

Try the Jolly Madison in New York. It's basic bit comfortable, but it's literally just a couple of minutes walk from grand central station.

Try to get fairly near the main Penn Station so that you are able to travel around easily, including if you want to save taxi money, travelling from JFK by public transport ( very straightforward)
