Hi all

I've booked an overnight stay in Windermere next week. I don't have a car and it looked the easiest to get to by train albeit somewhere more rural would have been preferred.

Can anyone recommend things to do in Windermere - good walks from the centre. Likely to have a dog with me too.

Also hoping to make it a reasonably cheap trip - breakfast is sorted in the hotel but was thinking of a chippy for tea rather than restaurant meal so hoping to find some picnic benches near the lake to enjoy

All suggestions welcome! Smile x

Windermere's not on the lake but you can walk down to Bowness, it's about a mile or so.

Brant Fell is a very accessible walk on foot without a car, it's between Bowness and Windermere. It's just a small hill but has nice views. Similar Orrest Head is a very small hill in Windermere but has great views from the top and you can carry on walking from there to Troutbeck which is a nice village.

The car ferry burnt down in the summer but foot passengers can still get a boat across from Bowness to the other side of the lake and you can explore the woods on that side of the lake which are nice.

There's a nice chippie in Windermere just off the main street.

Have fun!

I think you can get a bus to Brockhole visitor center, great day out and dog friendly.

The buses in the lakes are pretty good, worth looking into that too. Have a lovely time!

Haverthwaite steam railway is fun, walkable from Bowness (I assume that’s where you’re staying when you say ‘Windermere’?)

Sorry re read and you don't want a restaurant. Really is lovely though if my one else is looking ha ha! Hope you have a nice trip 😁

When i go to Bowness I like to go to Driftwood Fish and Chips on Glebe Road then sit on a bench by the lake just a few meters away
