Vague ideas for holidays next summer
Which island would be the most interesting for a week?
We would be with grown up children. Is there a term for them?

Do you have a budget in mind?.

Most first time visitors go to the island of Oahu which is where Waikiki Beach is located. However, it is very much America on Sea. Other islands like Kauai, Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii are generally quieter and has great scenery in terms of valleys and volcanoes.

Its a long way to go for a week; the flight alone from the West Coast to the Islands takes around 6 hours.

Hi we're off next year with 16, 18 and 19 year old!

It's incredibly expensive, mostly due to the flights.
Have a good look around the various websites and see which you think suits best. We've opted for and Airbnb on Big Island which makes a big difference to the budget.

What I've no idea of is how to estimate the day-to-day costs of food, petrol, etc. So, we've done some research and rounded up!

We went to the Big Island and loved the scenery, activities and beaches. We hiked around Volcano (maybe not possible now!!!) went scuba diving and sea kayaking.

Been to Maui (5 star hotel style) and Kauai (cheap as we could find Air BnB) and by far and away preferred Kauai - depends what you like to do really. Kauai is much less developed than the other islands, stunning coastline and jungle and Waimea Canyon is incredible.

Maui is gorgeous too but much more built up and more tourists - but not as many as the main drags like Waikiki and Honolulu, just depends what kind of holiday youre looking for.

I've been to Maui, Kawaii, Oahu and Big Island.
Maui was my least favourite as I felt it was too commercialised/touristy.
Kawaii was absolutely beautiful and laid back.
Big Island was like being on another planet - other worldly - just spectacular.
Oahu had lots to do in the way of activities and sightseeing, and there are some really quiet and unspoilt stretches of coast in the north.

If I went back, I'd do all of the above again except Maui.

Agree with pp though about it being a crazy idea for only a week (if you're going from the uk). You will need to spend at least a night in either LA or SF on the way out due to flight schedules.

Hmmmm thankyou we were thinking of time in LA either side but perhaps have underestimated things.
Perhaps back to the drawing board
