I havent flown much before so excuse my questions for being really stupid

Would the metal detector thing go off if Im wearing jewellery (white gold)?

If I put candles in my suitcase, would they look suspicious on the xray thing?

Does gatwick have really good shops to look around?

Thanks, from a very nervous Tammybear who doesnt want to fly, lol

Yes jewellry is fine, Gatwick is crap for shopping (compared to LHR) and I wouldn't bother telling them about anything I have packed unless asked or it is on the list that you see when you check in - mind you it says not to pack aerosols and I always do!!

Think it depends which terminal you go from but there was a better selection of shops in Gatwick (South) airside - Next, Nike, Books and so on -than we found at Heathrow, Terminal 3, I think, this, but depends what you are looking for. There is also a shopping village landside in the South terminal (upstairs from Check In) with shops like DP, Boots, Post Office, Clarks and various restaurants and cafes. You could probably look on the BAA website for details as they change quite often.

Your checked suitcase won't be xrayed in your presence but hand luggage will, but I'm sure they've seen it all before. Watch out for nail scissors, even baby ones, and sharp things packed in hand luggage though as they will confiscate them. My dh always triggers the detector with the metal studs on his shoes, worst they do is make you take it off to walk through again.
