Cheapish LA accommodation?

I'm staying in LA next March for a few nights with my family as part of a longer trip around California.
Stupidly didn't realise how expensive accommodation is and we're struggling to find anywhere reasonably priced. 4 adults and 2 children, so we need 3 doubles, Airbnb is usually my go to, and it's still really expensive compared to what I usually pay for hotels tight.
Anyone got any ideas/recommendations? Doesn't have to be in the centre as we'll have cars and plan to travel around.
This holiday is going to bankrupt us otherwise!

What is your budget per night and how many nights in total?. Rooms in the US usually are one king bed or two queen sized (double) beds. The term double is not used.

What are you planning on doing there?.

LA has a smallish downtown area but its really made up of about 100 separate cities that have coalesced into one mass. How old are your children roughly; teens or younger?. This may also influence where you will stay. Children under the age of 18 will not be able to have a room without their parent or guardian in it.

I can’t remember the ones we’ve stayed at before but two years ago we stayed at The Hotel Fullerton as we needed two rooms and anywhere closer to the city was too expensive, this is in the Anaheim/Fullerton area so it’s near to Disney and Knotts Berry Farm if they’re on your itinerary.

Booking.com have 3 bed apoartments that seem quite reasonable to me at around £160 a night.

Dcs are 4&7, I was hoping we could get an apartment that wasn't too grim, small as possible budget, probably 4 nights?

What’s a small budget in your view? Booking.com ranks appartments based on highest rating for least budget. I think £160 a night for 6 of you is fair and reasonable. These prices were for highly rated properties in March. If you want cheaper than this I’m not sure it would be in a decent area.

As Bubblesbuddy said, location is important in LA. The city has virtual traffic gridlock for most of the day so you'll have to trade location for distance if you want to save money. If you wanted a decent hotel with 3 bedrooms for 4 nights, you'd pay around £1200-£1500 in total around the middle of March (St Patrick's Day events, major sports events may bump up prices).
