Stump Cross Caverns/Brimham Rocks

My mum & I are taking my 2 kids & my 2 nephews (ages 5,8 11 & 13) away for a night in summer hols. We are in Newcastle & spending a day in flamingoland, staying overnight in travelodge & then want something to do on the following day before coming home. Both of the above have been recommended, have never done either, my mum also has childhood memories of Knaresborough & Mother Shiptons Well. Any thoughts/comments?

Knaresborough - I also have fond childhood memories

A day out at Whitby is nice.

Think mother shipton's cave is expensive & a bit crap.

Thanks, any more, anyone been to either?

stump cross cavern & brimham rocks is just down the road from me (BR literally 4 minutes) - it's a very long way from Flamingoland though (2 hours + depending on traffic).

Both are good fun with older children, not much use if it has been really wet though.

the cavern is closed after heavy rain because it floods

Thanks, shame about the caverns as that was going to be the plan if it was wet whilst we're there. Thanks for letting me know about distance, but we're actually stopping overnight midway between the two.

Oh no... Stump Cross is fab. about the floods.

If you are thinking of Knaresborough, it is pretty but Mother Shipton's Cave is small & boring and expensive.

I second Whitby. Or Scraborough.

well, it's lovely and sunny here now so let's hope it stays that way

Stump Cross is open when it's 'just' raining normally - it's only when it chucks it down for days on end that they shut it, AFAIK.

Have you thought of going to Fountains Abbey? That's only 10 minutes from Brimham Rocks and always very splendid; lots to see there too with the ruins, the old Manor and the water gardens.

Thank you, will add that to list of possibles. Have just rung Stump Cross Caverns & they are open so will let you know whihc one we go for
Thanks everyone

Well we were really lucky with the weather, flamingoland was great, predictable (!) but queues weren't too bad and getting in for free with tesco vouchers helps! Brimham Rocks were magnificent, all kids (5 8 11 & 13) loved it, we spent nearly 7 hours there and they didnt want to leave, some fairly heart stopping moments as my 5 yr old ds was determined to do everything my older nephews were doing but apart from that fantastic. thanks again for all your help
