DP and I would like to go away either at Christmas or in Jan some time, probably for ten days.

We'd like to spend a bit of time in a city/town but easily travel to lakes/mountains/forests. I'm thinking maybe somewhere in eastern Europe (Latvia, Białowieża Forest in Poland...).

Has anyone done anything like this and can you give me any recommendations?

I've stayed at the ice Hotel in Balea Lac, Fagaras mountains in Romania. It wasn't over new year, I think we went Feb time. We also visited Sighisoara, Targu Mures and Bran Castle. We travelled with a tour group but you could do it independently. If you're interested in the tour group I can PM you the company that I used.

Actually the company I used also assist with independent packages rather than just tour groups.

That sounds good! Yes, I'd like a PM –thanks very much.

Prague is lovely in the winter, and the countryside too. Iceland was fantastic and I can highly recommend. They have a lot of geothermal heating so there are lots of hot tubs, including outside. Fabulous when it's really cold.

Yes, Prague's a good idea. I went years and years ago. Can imagine it being beautiful in the snow. Have always fancied Iceland too, but worry that in the winter it might just be TOO cold – like, too cold to even go out!

I went to Iceland in December, and it was a lot warmer than Prague in January. Icleand was around -5 and Prague -15 daytime. Okay when you are well wrapped up though.
