New York footwear?

I'm going to NY for the first time, for a long weekend in December and need comfy, warm footwear. No idea where to start, so I asked my mum who suggested that they would have suitable stuff over there and it'd probably be cheaper. I think that's a risk, as my feet would be freezing while I shopped, and I'd have to do the shopping first, rather than at leisure iyswim.

Also, shoe shopping is difficult for me, as I have a wide toebox and narrow ankle/heel area. I think I'd definitely want to be sorted before we leave.

Any pearls of wisdom/recommendations?

I’d reccomend insulated duck boots like the ones from sorrel or ll bean- you’ll look like a true native plus they’re super comfy for walking in and they’ll keep your toes warm and dry if you get rain or snow.

And the pound is quite weak at the moment so the US isn’t the automatic bargain it used to be, and just for convenience factor alone I’d definitely get sorted before you go. There’d be nothing worse than trudging round the shops with freezing feet!

It might not be at all cold in December, I’ve been about five times for new year and the weather varies between snow drifts and freezing -12 type temperatures, and +15, stripping off because you’ve only brought huge coats and boots!

Having said that, I always go with the comfiest trainers/walking shoes I have and warmer socks, rather than boots.

I bought a pair of FitFlop black leather ankle boots the week before I went to NY. Not a single moment of discomfort, feet were warm and toasty. Went with everything too, long skirts or jeans.

I've also just bought a pair of Ugg Bonham leather ankle boots - they're sheepskin lined and really toasty. I felt quite bereft when I take them off!

I went last December 19th-24th and it was quite mild. A pair of comfy trainers is all you need, vans converse etc. take layers with clothing and hats etc but I wouldn't worry about footwear you walk so much you won't want huge thick boots on.

I spent my honeymoon in New York early December. You will have a great time. I wore flat leather boots. It does get very cold so would recommend some ear warmers/ hat too

We went in Dec a couple of years ago , it was quite mild . I wore sheepskin lined Timberland type boots and was fine .

Walking boots/shoes

fizzysister · 13/10/2018 17:42

Thanks for the ace insights. I didn't expect it could be mild!

We went in November OP and it was lovely temperatures during the day, but god there was a bitingly cold wind at night.

I arrived on the 28th, by which time it was about minus 10 with a windchill of minus 18 ! So you really could get anything at that time of year.

I wore an old pair of walking type boots, with lovely warm socks! You'll do a lot of walking, so whatever type of shoe/boot you go for, I'd get them a while before you go and make sure you break them in. It would be miserable to have blisters/sore feet as well as cold ones!

That's the plan, budgie!
