Geneva airport car hire - so confused!

we fly into Geneva next summer (GVA) . searching for hire cars requires selection of Geneva france or Switzerland (more expensive) - does it matter which I select? I have never been to Geneva airport - can anyone enlighten me? TIA

If you are planning on driving in Switzerland it would be worthwhile checking if cars hired on the French side include a Swiss Vignette (required to drive a car on a Swiss motorway).

Thanks whoareyou, not planning to drive in Switzerland (unless we get lost!)! Still confused why people refer to swiss and French car hire pick up - is Geneva airport sectioned into french and swiss sides at arrivals? i think i have done too much research, i should've just turned up !

Yes, it is sectioned into the Swiss and French sides. I remember having to take my full luggage trolley down an escalator there. You need to hire from the French side and avoid the Swiss motorway unless you want to buy a vignette.

Other than the vignette, it doesn't really make a difference in summer (it does in winter for snow tyres etc - supplied as standard on the swiss side but not french) although the French side is slightly trickier to drive back to (and you obviously have to return it to the right side). All the car rental signs are for the Swiss side but as long as you do your research it's fine.

thanks all for your clarification and reassuring comments
