Thinking of doing this summer 2019 with children aged 10 (nearly 11) 12 and 13. Can start in any of the above cities. Any advice? Is to doable or would we be better renting a car/taking our car from the UK? Thanks

I have been looking at doing similar. Check out Seat61.com - it gives advice on ALL the trains. I am thinking of doing Prague - Krakow - sleeper train. Kracow - Budapest - also a sleeper. Budpaest - Vienna, and then maybe Lake Bled, but I might have got a bit carried away.

I'm doing a very similar trip, but in January! I will need some Wine to keep warm! I'm flying into Bratislava, but getting the bus straight to Vienna. I only have 9 days so I am torn as to what to do next. Thinking about 3 nights in Vienna then going to Prague for 3 nights. Issue is I'm flying back home from Bratislava. Not sure whether I can fit Krakow in as well in only 9 nights. I was thinking of doing a day trip to Budapest from Vienna? Or maybe staying 1 night in Budapest

Budapest definitely needs more than a day trip - it's fantastic and large.

Bratislava is lovely, but very small, so you don't need to spend long there.

Never been a fan on Vienna myself, but Prague is well worth a long visit.

The train is really easy - Budapest to Vienna is about 2.5 hours, Vienna to Prague is about 4 hours. We booked via trainline.eu and got some good rates (first class cost very little more than ordinary class and meant DCs could stuff themselves on free snacks in the lounge). Food and drink on the train is not expensive either.

If you’re doing capital cities then I wouldn’t bother taking a car - parking is a hassle and public transport is excellent. Vienna does free travel for school age DCs in the holidays as well.
