European destinations for summer walking holiday

We fancy a holiday which includes some lovely places to go walking next summer. We don't want an organised holiday, just somewhere with lovely scenic walks nearby.
Talking about 5 max 10 mike walks, not too hard going just pleasant. Where have you been that might fit the bill? Thanks

Wengen in Switzerland. Fly to Zurich then train it (past the lakes Smile..) It’s car free, lots of walks there or can get gondola/train to lots more walking places, all of which are signposted really well. It’s fab.

Germany. You have a huge variety of alpine, middle size ranges and flat areas.

It depends what kind of walking you like.

We also had great time in southern France and Majorca but it is hot in high Summer, far too hot for me to comfortably walk.

I'd recommend Samoens in the French Alps. There are some lovely walks in the vicinity where you can walk next to rivers and waterfalls and have lunch in a mountain refuge. There is also an interesting walk at the cirque at sixt fer a cheval a few km down the road from Samoens. We drove there (booked ferry plus apartment through Peak Retreats).

Austria - beautiful walking!

Some stages of the GR2 in Corsica are easy-moderate difficulty, well-marked and not too difficult to return to the road if you didn’t want to stay in the mountains. I really do recommend it as a walking holiday though, I did 5 stages in 5 days and it was glorious!

Thank you all, we were looking at Germany, Austria or Switzerland but good to see so many other suggestions

The Bavarian Alps region, just south of Munich. Stunning green scenery, alpine style chalets, clean freshwater lakes to swim in, wide rivers, cable cars, cows with cow bells, a fairytale Schloss or two and best of all not overrun with tourists.

Black Forest
Bavaria Alps
Frankonian Switzerland
Rhön
Palatine
Harz

Thank you all, we've pretty well decided on the Bavarian Alps for week one, but fancy flying from there to somewhere we can chill and mybe do some gentle walks on week 2. Any further ideas beyond those already mentioned?

(Should have said somewhere different to week 1)

The Dolomites, stunning.

I haven't done it, but went to Porto recently. There was a couple at the airport who were walking from Porto to Lisbon. They were very excited, so might be worth looking at?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 06/10/2018 12:53

Some great suggestions thank you

Switzerland or turkey. As you may have to get one of them new walking permits to walk in the eurozone next year.
