We have done really well with a house sale and we want to go on a really nice holiday. We have 2 children (4 and 2) and I don't want to travel far so I'm thinking somewhere really upmarket but extremely family friendly in the UK or France. Any suggestions?

I like the idea of a farm holiday where you get involved around the farm, but I am open to suggestions.

I have a slightly funky idea: The Isle of Muck - Outer Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland. The whole Island is self sufficient in that there's one farm, one school etc and they all look after everyone. There is one hotel and a couple of self-catering places. great for kids - rummaging on the beaches, going over on the boat, helping on the farm etc, lobster fishing, trips to neighbouring isles 'Rhum' & 'Eigg'. The hotel will send you off with an enormous picnic for the day. There are no shops etc - bit of a wild time away but the kids would love it. Look here and scroll to the bottom for the hotel. the food is fab.

Ooh, how funny, Pipe. I used to go there when I was a little girl. My ex stepmother knows the laird.. .. .. . . .. .Fantastic place.

I know I constantly recommend them - but for good reason, I promise. Look at Tots to France

They have some fab properties in France (all VERY child friendly). There's one that is quite eco-friendly too with chickens and an orchard that you can collect your own eggs/fruit from.

Also not sure when you want to go, but in September in France it's the champagne harvest where you can watch all the grapes being picked and at some of the estates, you can even join in. Tots to France has a property in the area called La Manoir Champagnois

If you want really upmarket try Elegant Resorts, they have some family-oriented places.

Gracious winky - no-one has ever heard of the place! The one of the 3 lairds was my godfather but he topped himself....my dad is on the island at the moment.
