Help! Destination wedding in Mexico

My brother has announced he is getting married in april in playa del carmen. To be frank we would never choose to go there on holiday and it will cost a fortune. The only way I think we could justify the cost is if we went to the states first and then fly to cancun a few days before the wedding and then home. We have a 3 and 5 year old. Any suggestions of US Itineraries?

If family finances do not allow it then say sorry but you cannot attend their wedding celebration.

How long would you spend in the US beforehand or would you simply transit through there?. I would not advise that course of action anyway. Flying to the US (Miami for instance) and then getting on an internal flight from there is not going to be either cheap or cheerful and you could have the same routing on the return leg thus adding hours to an already long day.

What is it that would justify an expensive long haul holiday in USA over Mexico?

Cancun/boozy resorts are not really my bag, but we went to playa del carmen this year as we were holidaying with friends who enjoy diving there. We spent a few weeks exploring the yucatan peninsula with our 2 and 6 year olds. It was fab!
Maybe base yourself elsewhere in that part of Mexico and just spend a few days at the wedding resort.

Playa del carmen is really cheep we are just back from there and for 16 night in spending money we spent €2000 between the 2 of us for lunch and dinner out drink every night beach club and 8 brekfast out and a few message for both us I think we had 4 each. Now we don't do all insluive and eat in small restraunts off the main ave.
There is so much to do and see you have tulum cobs and for kids you have the theme parks
On the other hand we find USA every expansive.

We combined with new York. It does put the price up Hugely though you would be better from a cost perspective just going to Mexico.

But dont go to cancun. Riviera Maya is much nicer.

We went to a wedding in Playa two years ago and also had a fabulous time there staying at a boutique hotel and exploring the area. We were living in the US at the time so flew from Atlanta. I agree with other posters that a holiday in Playa flying direct from the UK into Cancun is likely to be cheaper than going via the US. If you really want to do the latter, there are endless options! It totally depends on your interests. If you fancy doing the Deep South, then that's easy from Atlanta. Equally, you could fly into Florida if you want to do the usual parks etc......so many possibilities....

Going via US is going to push the cost up.
What is it that you like doing on holiday? Mexico is a fantastic country and has a lot more to offer than sun and cheap booze.
It has a lot more visible history than the US and the area you are traveling to has great heritage sites, beaches and jungles. There are colonial cities but you would want to check security advice for them.
With small dc I wouldn't add a stop over unless you absolutely had to.
Agree with pp that Riveria Maya is much nicer than Cancun.
