Taxi from Heathrow

Hello,
My mum and her partner will be visiting soon from abroad. They arrive at Heathrow quite late and there is a chance they might miss the coach to our town. So as an alternative and for less stress i was thinking maybe booking a taxi might be a better idea?
I was wondering if anyone had done something similar before. If yes, do they wait for you by the gate with your name on a sign? Or they say to you 'right, you need to go to that exit and the cab will be there'. Heathrow is quite big and both mother and partner are terrible in navigation. I am quite worried they are gonna get lost.
I will phone taxi companies and get some prices etc but I wanted to have a general idea of how it works.
Thank you

I would book an Uber as it night be slightly cheaper.

Anyway you provide the flight number and the driver then checks it and waits in the arrival area at the appropriate Terminal. They do hold up a name board and normally wait right in an area that your parents will have to walk through ie they'll walk past the driver in order to leave the Terminal.

If you live out of range of an Uber or black cab then just book with a minicab/taxi firm close to you. I always do this when we fly into LHR and stay with DMother. You give them your flight number and they keep an eye on it and are waiting straight where you walk out after customs with a sign with your name on. But you do get a contact number so any problems finding them then you can just call!

Oh, lovely thank you for your replies! I will have a look at our local taxi companies, i just wanted to see if indeed they are waiting for you with a sign as you get out from the gates/terminals after you pick up suitcases. Thank you for the information Smile

How far away from Heathrow do they have to go? We use to fly into Heathrow and call a local taxi firm when we got through the airport to take us to slough only cost £30 and they were normally there within 15 mins.

You need to ask.

Some will park up & meet inside the airport at the arrivals with a sign.
Some will wait in the carpark in a set place.
Some will wait outside of the airport zone. and drive in when they get a text from you.

The occasional fool will try to do a swift pick up in the departures area and risk the fine.

It’s cost driven because the parking is expensive.

Just ask if they’ll do what you want & what they’ll charge.
