Christmas Abroad - DH wants Guatemala, I'm not sure!

Hoping to find some perspective! My DH works in Guatemala for approx one month every year. This year we can actually afford a foreign holiday and we fancy spending Christmas abroad for a change. Kids will be 9, 11 and 14.

DH thinks 10 days in Guatemala would be amazing. Interesting and different for the kids and also warm and sunny, etc. What's putting me off is:
a) possible illness and needing jabs. When I went there I had dreadful diarrhoea, on one day I could barely leave the hotel and ended up on the loo about 12 times. OK if annoying for adults, but not great for (quite skinny) kids, surely? DH says we will just be extra careful about only drinking bottled water, etc. That doesn't sound particularly relaxing to me!
b) What will the kids do for entertainment? I'm happy to look at scenery, read books etc, but not sure they will be entertained by 'beautiful scenery' and watching volcanoes (btw we won't be going into any danger zones) for more than a day or two. I don't think there are any "resorts" as such, but he has found some nice bungalows with pools... I just worry that my kids have only been to France and the Canaries so I think they will be requesting water parks and ice cream. Surely this is more of a teenager holiday rather than one for under 12s.... He thinks if we go when they are older then our eldest won't want to come. Personally i think he will be happy to come on a free holiday whatever his age!

My other problem is that I haven't come up with any alternatives! Time is ticking on, I know, and we don't want to do skiing. I was looking at Sardinia or Sicily, but will it be freezing? I kind of want winter sun and a little adventure, but not so much adventure that we end up with D&V or being flown home!

Thoughts, suggestions, most welcome! Anybody else taken young kids to central America?

This holiday he is proposing sounds more for his benefit than for yours as a family unit.

Apart from the concerns you cite you would need to take precautions from being bitten by mosquitoes (Chikungunya virus is present there and there is no specific anti viral treatment).

I would also be concerned about the political situation (there are frequent demonstrations at short or no notice) and the high levels of violent crime. The Foreign Office travel website has a lot of info about Guatemala on it.

Florida keys or Belize would be my pick over Christmas. anywhere now is going to be pretty expensive. would not take kids to Guatemala personally. you will need to go pretty far afield if you want it warm.
