City break recommendations for DH and I

Hi MNers

I'm looking for some recommendations for a weekend city break for me and DH. Our thoughts so far are Rome or Barcelona. Never been to either before (well except a boozy weekend in Barcelona many years ago when we saw very little other than the inside of bars/ clubs). We enjoy sightseeing, good food, shopping, history.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Prague, Bruges? Both very pretty, historic etc. Or Amsterdam, great museums. All have great food to suit all tastes

barcelona, prague, amsterdam all amazing places :)

JBFletcherismyaunt · 16/09/2018 14:42

Thanks both. Will give them a look. I've been to Bruges myself, didn't think about there.

Depends on what time of year?

Barcelona is lovely, as is Amsterdam. Vienna is also beautiful.

Rome is lovely for a short break - full of history, good food and sightseeing. Not a shopper so don't know about shopping but loads of sightseeing.

Venice is lovely and great food if you ask for recommendations at hotel. Lots of sightseeing and quite unique. Shopping is quite boutique like from what I remember.

Bologna or Florence are my best city break places.

Redtartanshoes · 16/09/2018 20:30

Have been to Barcelona and Amsterdam. Barcelona is my absolute fav but prefer early summer/autumn as love sitting outside people watching in the sun

Redtartanshoes · 16/09/2018 20:31

Not sure how easy it would be to get to Bologna or zflirence from Scotland-shire

DandelionAndBedrock · 16/09/2018 21:55

Flights Edinburgh to Bologna (£25 pp each way with Ryanair for February at the moment - just checked). Bologna airport is a 20euro taxi from the centre.

Pisa airport is bigger than Florence, but not sure about Scottish flights.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I'm going to have fun looking at them all! Would be going next autumn, and I love people watching too Redtartan. We're not in Scotland and live near some major airports so can get pretty much anywhere.

Bologna is great for food and has enough to see in a few days.

InternalGangsta · 19/09/2018 21:20

Just been to Plovdiv in Bulgaria. Lovely for a few days.
