We are thinking of trying this for our summer holiday in August, has anyone done it?
Will we get any sleep?
DSs, 5 & 8, love trains but I don't want to arrive knackered even if I am helping save the planet.

We have done Vienna to Dusseldorf overnight (and return) twice with DS. He loved it, and more importantly slept well each time. I am assuming you are going to book a proper sleeper, not sitting up overnight.

The first time was when he was almost 3 and I was on my own with the car, DS and the dog . The second time was a year later when he was nearly 4.

We find the whole thing so much nicer than flying. So much so that we are doing it again at the end of Aug for our holidays (overnight from Vienna to Ancona for a holiday in Le Marche & Umbria), without the dog this time .

We were planning to take the dog too!

However it looks as if its going to be too expensive to take the train... more than three times what it would cost us to fly. I guess because it's August,

it's a shame as we travel this route a lot and I would love to try the train.
