Can anyone recommend a cheap but nice hotel in Berlin please?

My dsis stayed at a Novotel near (or in) Potsdamer Platz last month and said it was brilliant.

Circus hotel in mitte- they also have an associated hostel

Each room decorated by a different artist and has a fab little courtyard !

Following this with interest I want to go for my birthday next year . Looks great place to visit . My dh not convinced though , help persuade me is it good ? Food , drink nightlife any good ?

I can't recommend a hotel as I stayed in a hostel.
However, Alexanderplatz is a great area and have lots of hotel choices including a holiday inn.

We stayed at the nhow, close to the east side gallery and near to 2 train stations.

Hotel Eurostars, right next to Friedrichstrasse station. Super central and if you are flying in to Schoenefeld there is a direct train. They have a nice little sauna and pool on the top floor and they do good breakfast!

Westin Grande, cost me about £320 a couple of years back, for 3 nights...lovely hotel.

We used the Nhow too, bar is expensive but the location was great. Hotel was clean and comfortable, generally quite reasonably priced. Staff very friendly and helpful. We wanted to be in the Friedrichshain area for atmosphere/bars etc. and it's really easy to find.

Have you looked at the Motel One chain? They are all over Germany and have quite a few in Berlin - I stayed at the one at Hackescher Markt, found the location great and they are always good value.

We stayed here and loved it! Great area for restaurants and we walked everywhere.
