Anyone else got a list of holiday destinations they are really not bothered about visiting - even for free?

Mine includes:
Las Vegas - too bloody tacky
Florida - too humid
Norway - too many dark trees
China - pollution?
Australia - 22 hours in a plane? No thanks
Hong Kong - too humid
Madeira - too many people my age (old)
Iceland, which everyone raves about

I went to Coventry once for some kind of course. It was pretty bleak.

Maybe this thread should be renamed 'entire cities/islands/countries that I have written off as horrible because I have only been to the very worst part of it, or haven't even been to but assume that it is all like the stereotypical worst part of it, even though much of said place is lovely'

Hear, hear.

Dublin: grey, unattractive, dull, rubbish food
Australia: glad I've been but wouldn't bother again. I hated Sydney. I did like some other areas we travelled to, like Port Douglas, which was beautiful.
Prague: meh.
Amsterdam: mega meh.
Paris: just totally underwhelming, and the people I met weren't particularly nice.

Newcastle? If you’d said somewhere like Milton Keynes I might have been able to understand, but on what grounds could you dismiss a place with such rich and important history? A city with some of the best examples of Georgian architecture, a fantastic 12th century castle, numerous museums and galleries, a beautiful theatre, and wonderful quayside.

Could you please enlighten us @Anotherdayanothernight

Hull is also getting quite a bashing, we used to travel a fair way to visit Hull, it has a world class aquarium, several excellent museums, impressive architecture and an interesting history. During city of culture it had a lot of art activities but we always enjoyed it before.

I am inclined to agree with Barbaraof Seville

DeltaG · 28/08/2018 16:24

Indeed, Barbara!

southnownorth · 28/08/2018 18:25

Agree Barbara.

A lot of the places people have hated I have loved.

I feel very privileged to have been able to travel anywhere.

Frazzled2207 · 28/08/2018 19:00

High Wycombe.

Shark el sheikh though I will say that the snorkelling was fabulous.

Also surprised that people think they can write off entire continents having never been there or only been to a corner of it.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 29/08/2018 08:51

Shark?! Grin

ComeOnGordon · 29/08/2018 09:22

@GreyGardens88 - she’s not a snob but she’d been to Siena and Florence on the same trip and was blown away by both places. She said the beauty of Rome was completely ruined by how commercial the whole place was and how dirty the city was. Think she’s allowed her opinion without being called a snob.

UtterlyDesperate · 29/08/2018 09:26

@Frazzled2207 oi! What's wrong with Wycombe?! AngryGrinGrin

Frazzled2207 · 29/08/2018 09:31

Lol at shark el sheikh! Obvs I meant sharm....

Don't mean to offend any Wycombe people. I had this impression that it was going to be a really pretty market town and it was possibly the most underwhelming English town I've ever been, and quite stinky (brewery?). However the surrounding villages and countryside are indeed lovely. And I'm sure Wycombe itself has nice bits. But I spent a whole summer nearby and didn't see them. It was a few years ago though.

I'm open to changing my mind on a few of these - Hong Kong, Iceland, China. Just that they're not top of my bucket list - and there are so many amazing places still on the list that I would have to live to 200 to have time for all of those, so ...

Actually agree it is a real shame to rule out whole continents - Africa in particular is amazingly diverse and some countries are amongst my favourites - Morroco was marvellous, Gambia v interesting especially if you get away from the coastal resorts and Uganda really special - great vibe.

Inevitable that if people have had a bad experience they will not necessarily be itching to get back there and it can be worth giving places a second go , but probably only after all the places you are desperate to see have been ticked off!

Agreed Barbara.

Op shocked that you mentioned countries you have never actually been to.

Nakedavenger74 · 29/08/2018 10:27

So many people saying Australia doesn't interest them. I felt the same until I moved there for work.
I'm very well travelled and lived in 5 countries before but Australia is one of the most beautiful, naturally diverse and wild countries I've ever been to.
It's a wonderful country. It's too fucking big though!
