Anyone else got a list of holiday destinations they are really not bothered about visiting - even for free?

Mine includes:
Las Vegas - too bloody tacky
Florida - too humid
Norway - too many dark trees
China - pollution?
Australia - 22 hours in a plane? No thanks
Hong Kong - too humid
Madeira - too many people my age (old)
Iceland, which everyone raves about

These I wouldn’t bother visiting again
Benidorm
Hanoi
Mandalay
Madrid
LA
Glasgow
Tenerife
Malaga

fieryginger · 28/08/2018 02:44

Australia - it just does not appeal.

AltheaorDonna · 28/08/2018 02:45

I can't understand people dismissing entire countries, or even continents when they've never been! There aren't many places I wouldn't visit if they are safe and I got the chance. I'm quite surprised at the love for Belfast too, I'm from NI and lived in Belfast for a few years. Its a pleasant enough city but I can't imagine it blowing people away! I prefer Cork. And Rome is absolutely wonderful, yes there is a lot of graffiti, but how can you not be amazed by all the history and the ice-cream.

Oh and everyone with no interest in Australia, fair enough it is very far away. But its absolutely beautiful, you're missing out.

littlebillie · 28/08/2018 03:03

Norway is beautiful 🤔

123MothergotafleA · 28/08/2018 03:15

Iran. They slam you into Evin prison for no reason at all, apart from spite and sheer malice.
Sharm el Sheik and Hurghada, the latter has deadly hotels where you might end up dead.
Dublin. It's very overrated, expensive and you are likely to get your pocket/ handbag picked.

woodfires · 28/08/2018 03:19

Tenerife, awful grey, tacky and depressing.
I visited because a friend in the UK returned home to there. I had same fears but in the centre and north the Island was full of old historic towns, lunar landscapes, excellent local food and wine and traditional street parades with live camels, sweet throwing and present giving. We all thought it was great.

jarviscockerslover · 28/08/2018 03:34

I wouldn't return to Mumbai, although loved other parts of India. Other cities I thought overrated- Monaco, Nice, HK, Hainan Island (China)

I would definitely recommend and return to Bhutan (Thimphu), Sydney, Darwin, south Sri Lanka, most of China and Mexico City

F1reintheWh0le · 28/08/2018 03:35

I know someone who has been to North Korea recently. They had a guide for the whole tour (independent travel not allowed). They enjoyed it. There were not many people in the photographs that they shared.

woodfires · 28/08/2018 03:39

Jarvis travel really is a personal thing, I really loved Mumbai but although I have visited Mexico City several times (and think it has world class museums) I struggle to like it much.

GoldenMcOldie · 28/08/2018 03:50

I would like to set the record straight about Australia.

Unless you intend inspecting the crawl space in old buildings, spiders are just NOT a thing.

In 10 years of living here, we would have had 4, maybe 5 spiders in the house. Probably less than in the UK.

MakeItStopNeville · 28/08/2018 03:53

I don’t get the love for Iceland at all. It was grey, dull and overly expensive. Anywhere else I’ve been, I’d happily give another go

BinkyandBunty · 28/08/2018 03:56

And it's Australia's distance from the rest of the world that makes it interesting.

Totally different landscapes, flora, fauna and indigenous culture to anywhere else in the world. The sounds and smells of the bush are unique. Even the sky is different - a bigger, brighter blue by day and billions of stars at night.

ShanghaiDiva · 28/08/2018 03:58

Op
Have been to most of the places on your list and live in one of them.
Places that don't appeal to me:
Maldives - too small, nothing to do and would be bored out of my brain
Any safari - been there, done that, probably still have dust up my nose
Saudi Arabia

Babymammy · 28/08/2018 04:04

Bangkok. Wouldn't go back or recommend !

KennDodd · 28/08/2018 04:16

I can't think of anywhere I wouldn't like to go. Shocked people are writing off whole continents!

KennDodd · 28/08/2018 04:18

Actually, I take that back. Disney, never been, can't imagine it would be anything other than hellish.

DeltaG · 28/08/2018 05:48

I've visited many, many countries and lived in 5 on 3 continents. Live in Switzerland now.

There's nowhere I'd rule out and I'd always give a place a second chance. Not everywhere is comparable though, of course. There are so many variables.

One place I've visited multiple times and wouldn't return if I could choose, is Dubai. Based on this experience, I'd also not relish a visit to KSA.

borntobequiet · 28/08/2018 06:03

Laughing about the Egyptian temples that were good in their day.

ajandjjmum · 28/08/2018 07:31

We went to UIuru for a couple of nights. Fantastic dinner in the desert, but the rest of our time was a big bit of nothingness. The aboringinal storyteller was in training, so could only tell us part of the story (???), and everywhere we went was just a selling opportunity.

Lots of people find it amazing.

I suppose that's the case with many places - it's the luck of the draw in terms of the weather, and the experience you have there.

Booie09 · 28/08/2018 07:39

Whitby: Too many tourists, shit on pavements, over priced food and drink.

Loftus

Middlesbrough

Benidorm

Hull

Scarborough

Worthing

WrongKindOfFace · 28/08/2018 07:54

I can’t really think of anywhere I definitely wouldn’t go. I’m not overly keen on the idea of Dubai, but I’d give it a whirl if someone else was paying.

I have seen the pyramids and thought they were mildly disappointing -some of their majesty is lost when they’re surrounded by fast food places.

KennDodd, I thought I’d hate Disney, but it’s actually good fun. If nothing else the parks are very well designed. And clean.

DaphneduM · 28/08/2018 08:16

UK town I'd never go back to - Brighton - terrible traffic, drunks very visibly comatose during the day, the Lanes under-whelming. I thought it had a horrible atmosphere overall - can't see why people rave about it. Love Shrewsbury and Bewdley.

Loved all European travel - Greece, Greek Islands, Italy (Rome, Florence, the Lakes including Iseo, Garda and Maggiore), France - Paris and Cote d'Azure, Malta, Nirjha and Barcelona in Spain, Berlin, Prague, Amsterdam - all lovely for differing reasons.

Needsleepneedsleep · 28/08/2018 11:35

Wells-Next-The-Sea, Norfolk - truly awful place, smelly, filthy, crowded, full of tourists, drunks, chavs and rundown takeaways/cafes etc

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 28/08/2018 11:42

Thailand - animal cruelty
Borneo - Palm oil plantations
India - appalling womens' rights issues
Much of the Middle East - same
Faroe Islands - annual whale cull
Japan - whaling
King's Lynn - a whole thread on Mumsnet describing it as the arsehole of Norfolk
Anywhere with a beach - you've seen one seaside resort, you've seen them all

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/08/2018 14:18

Maybe this thread should be renamed 'entire cities/islands/countries that I have written off as horrible because I have only been to the very worst part of it, or haven't even been to but assume that it is all like the stereotypical worst part of it, even though much of said place is lovely'

Nearly everywhere mentioned on this thread would fall into this category.
