Cambodia in April - family of 4. Where to start?

I would love to visit Cambodia in April. 2 weeks. I am not a backpacker and don't like slumming it but equally, I do not like the all inclusive offering by the pool and seeing nothing. I need to feel safe, I need to know there's a toilet somewhere, and a minimum hygiene standard when eating. But I definitely want to do lots of walking and soaking up the local culture. Kids are 11 and 14, so old enough to do the same, I just don't know where to start for this sort of holiday. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.

Siem reap - great resultants, lots of nice quality gift shops (away from pub street and the night market) and lots of hotels include a free tuk tuk service. Angkor wat is stunning and there are many temples to visit - bayon is my favourite. There are decent loos at the tourist sites, take hand sanitiser, make sure vaccinations are up to date and you will be fine.
P.penh is about a 5 hour drive from Sr - road is okay and a car with driver will cost around 80 dollars. There are a few places to stop along the route which have decent restaurants and loos.
Lots to see in pp - killing fields, palace, temples, museums and plenty of mid range hotels.
Not sure where else you are thinking of sihanoukville? Lots of Chinese investment, big hotels and casinos - mixed reviews from friends who have been there.
Main concern I would have is that april will be very, very hot.

Just come back from Cambodia and Thailand and the one thing both Cambodians and Thais said to us was they absolutely cannot understand why tourists go in April which is the worst month as far as they are concerned - insanely, unbelievably, horrendously hot.

Siem Reap is great - lots of good hotels - we booked ours through Booking.Com. Plenty of decent loos! Like Shanghai, Bayon is my favourite of the Angkor temples followed by Ta Prohm and Banteai Srei. We flew into Bangkok, had a few days there, then did the 45 min flight from Bangkok over to Siem Reap, had 4 days there (which was enough for serious temple overload) then we hopped back to Bangkok and down to Koh Samui (another 45 minute flight) for a few days beach recuperation. Very easy.

The one thing we found with Cambodia - which we fell in love with completely, is that whilst it is cheap it's not as cheap as we thought it was going to be. Tourists don't use Cambodian currency at all - it is all done in dollars and with the £ against the $ at the moment it made it a bit more expensive that we anticipated.

I'd definitely go back - in fact planning return to Bangkok, flights to PP then on to Vietnam, but absolutely not in April.
