Cheapish in Italy summer 2019

Budget about £3/4k for 2 adults plus DC who will be aged 10, 4 and 3 next July/August.

I know that budget isn't massive for 5 of us, but we've just moved house and I was hoping we'd still be able to get away. Have done Eurocamp the last 2 years and would like a change from it next year if possible.

We've done Italy this year and spent just over 3k for a week at Lake Como, with three similar age dc . So five of us
Accommodation - 2 bed flat plus sofa bed in the living room , air con , on the lake - £700 incl city tax
Car hire circa £500
Flights to Milan £450- book well in advance . That's £450 for the five tickets
Spends - £1500. We spent a lot of time in Switzerland as well and this includes all the petrol, toll, food, etc
If you wanted to spend £4K I'd spend more time this adding to each individual cost bar the flights .

Also we used booking.com so book now and pay later with free cancellation and Rentalcars.com so we staggered all the costs and spread it out. The only thing paid upfront were the flights which were cheap .

How about Sicily? We did Catania/Taormina/Syracuse by train which was easy & cheap. Trains in Italy are really inexpensive and can be booked in advance on Trenitalia. We had apartments in Syracuse & Catania (both beautiful and both cheap!) which I booked through booking.com and a hotel in Taormina (which was more expensive but had a pool).Syracuse in particular was amazing - lots of history & very pretty. For the 3 of us & not including spending money it was about £1800 -£1900. We flew Norwegian. Or as another option, cheap flights into Verona, stay there a couple of days & do a train trip to Venice and then take the bus to Lake Garda? The bus from Verona (v cheap) stops at number of towns & there's plenty of campsite places in the area.
