New York at New Year with Kids

Does anyone have any advise on what we could do on New Years Eve with kids in New York please?
We've been told that Times Square is too manic and thet restaurants won't allow them to stay til midnight (they're 11&13) so we're a bit stumped.

Would see what the weather is like that day if you are there then.

Many restaurants close early on New Year's Eve in any case so I would suggest you have a decent lunch. It was well below zero there last new year's eve as well, one of the coldest temps ever recorded for that time of year.

Avoid Times Square at all costs from lunchtime onwards. It usually gets closed off entirely from around 3.00pm and there are no toilet facilities provided.

Times Square is crowded at the best of times. I hate to think what it would be NYE. It depends where you're staying, but the fireworks in Prospects Park, Brooklyn, are worth going to. Pre-firework entertainment and refreshments start at 11. I'd find somewhere to eat in Lower Manhattan and then walk Brooklyn Bridge then get the metro to Prospect's Park for 10:30. Best viewing spots include Grand Army Plaza, inside the green space on the West Drive in the park, and along Prospect Park West between Grand Army Plaza and Ninth Street.
