Folks with Vegas experience...

...how doable is Las Vegas with a 6yo...?

DH & I we’re due to go when DS arrived, and were considering whether we could take him. We’re not wild party animals, so not looking for ways to get our kicks with him in tow, but more wondering what there is that would appeal to him...

Doable? Or a prescription for a miserable 6yo?

I wouldn't do it!

Vegas is brilliant but completely geared at adults. Why not take your son somewhere with much more for kids eg San Diego or New York.

Bugger. Was hoping that we could go for a week and puctuate days by the pool with something he’d think was a treat... back to the drawing board then...

People do it there is loads to do with kids. You just have to keep off the casino floor.

Stay at Excalibur, Americans describe it as the chucky cheese of casinos.

Time of year is a factor in a visit to LV because of its desert climate (it can also be very cold in the winter).

Your son will be able to walk through the casinos with you but you will not be allowed to linger at all. I would also consider travelling somewhere else more family friendly; Orlando in FL springs to mind.

I wouldn’t take children there. We went earlier in the year and there were a lot of adult themes around including lorries going up and down the strip advertising girls direct to your room along with scantily clad pictures.

Also quite a few people with minimal clothes (ie just nipple tassels and a pair of hot pants!) handing out flyers for strip clubs.

There was a sleazy element that I didn’t notice last time we went. As adults we could ignore that and still loved our trip, not sure it’d be so much fun if I was trying to shield kids from elements of it.

Orlando is of course rest for kids, or New York?

I wouldn't take kids to Las Vegas. It's casinos, shows of various kinds, lounge bars, and huge, huge hotels with lots of walking. It's been a while since I was last there, but I wouldn't take our kids. However, Orlando is great and it's not all theme parks. Your DS is a good age for the Disney parks, however, and there is plenty to keep you all amused. I thought I was going to hate Orlando, but we all had a good time. Just don't go in July/Aug - it's very hot, humid and crowded. October half-term is a great time to visit.

Thanks folks. Definitely back to the drawing board - I suspected as much - we were offered a subsidised trip to Vegas, otherwise we’d definitely be heading Florida instead. We had a few days stopover in New York last year and enjoyed it - just found it very expensive. Thanks for all the input!

Made this mistake and Went with a toddler fo a week- wouldn't recommend. There really is not much that is for kids, and it limits what you can do. We had thought pool interspersed with trips. Another mistake . The pools were, well think of any film with a Vegas trip and that's it - it was drunk frat party behaviour, broken glass everywhere etc.

I would say orlando definitely, theme parks are great, also Kennedy space centre
