Venice in May

Recommendations for a weekend in Venice in May? It will hopefully be dh and my first night without the dc so we are looking for romantic, but sensible budget as it’s just the weekend.

Lots of the hotels in Venice are all in old Venetian style so quite romantic! They are however expensive to be right in the middle.

You could get more space and be in Mestre (or that area) and travel in to Venice in the day or stay in the centre and pay more/accept smaller space. Last time I was there I chose centre and chose canal view room at Antico Hotel Doge. It was fine and having the canal view in the morning was great. It was about £200 per room per night for weekday though...

There are cheaper rooms in the centre but check for bathroom being ensuite or shared!

We will be centre- it’s only for a weekend and we won’t get a weekend to ourselves again in a long time so don’t want to waste time travelling. But I do think £200 is expensive for one room - suspect that is the bottom end for what we are after this time!

I guess we Airbnb /self cater most of the time with young dc, I thought a hotel would be nice! I guess so would winning the lottery ... realistically would like two nights for

Try Ca' Bragadin Carabba - we stayed there a couple of years ago in March & the rate was good, room lovely & it's about 5 minutes from the Rialto Bridge. It doesn't look like anything from the outside & is a pig to find (there is a YouTube video that gives you a guide) but our room was huge & looked out onto a pretty square. Trivago might find you a good deal on it - it was just over £100 a night when we stayed. As above, you could commute in from Mestre (or even Padua which is prettier) but Venice is nicest when you stay in Venice & don't have to trot around with the crowds all day!

We recently stayed in hotel Olimpia, it’s reasonably priced, good breakfast , has a beautiful garden and a handy location near Piazzale Roma.
I’ve booked the Sofitel la gare on Murano for next April, we stopped for lunch there and it is fabulous - they send a private boat for you at the airport 😍
