Monchique Fires Algarve

Just in case anyone is planning to travel to Monchique in the next few days, there is a huge wildfire there which has been slight since Friday, and people are being evacuated out of the area. Please check with whoever you’ve booked with

I just came on to see if you had posted about this Costa. We normally go in August , were in Silves this time last year but went in July this year instead. Awful to see Monchique like that. How is it with you, have noticed the skies are a very odd colour . Feel for the hard working bombieros :(

It’s very hot and we have ash falling as far south as Carvoeiro, but the fires are in the mountains at monchique, caldas de monchique and foia. There were rumours that the fire was getting close to Silves earlier but I don’t know if that’s still the case, the wind changes direction and the fire goes with it

Lots of people have lost everything and there are organisations putting evacuated people in touch with people with spare accommodation - no easy task at the height of the season

And of course the bombeiros, mostly volunteers who are so brave and dedicated. There are charities collecting bottles of water, food and spare clothes, which are delivered to fire stations along the algarve and taken to where they’re most needed. Everyone is doing what they can to help

@Costacoffeeplease how are things today? Looks like the fires are not abating.

I've recommended several people to go to the Algarve this summer and we are coming end of August.

Is it very hot there at the moment? I saw something that said it was in the 40s.

It is hot but in the 30s now

The fire is still going although the Silves side seems to be abating for now 🤞

Oh I hope so. I have been so worried.

Love Caldas especially. And Silves. We have a lovely old chicken piri piri place we've been going to for about 30 years.

The fire is just about out now but there’s a lot of work to do with the people and animals who have been hurt and displaced. There is an auction on Facebook to raise funds for the treatment of wild and domestic animals affected. If anyone would like to join in please send me a pm.
