Has anyone managed to find good last-minute deals for short breaks away during the Summer holidays?

I have just been told I would be getting a couple of days off at work (think one three-day weekend and one four-day weekend coinciding with the BH Monday) as it is quite a slow time of the year for us.

My husband and I always book holidays in advance so we are pretty new to booking last-minute holidays. I have tried to look up some old threads but I have mostly found threads involving 'proper holidays' (one week, all inclusive, etc) but I was wondering if anyone would have more advice regarding shorter breaks, for e.g.

  • We would not necessarily be looking at a whole package, but perhaps a couple of cheap flights. We would look for accommodation/hotel separately.
  • If in the UK, we would not be looking at flights but simply a couple of nights in a hotel.

You'd think airlines/hotels would be keen to fill the last remaining seats or rooms? I am conscious this may take us to less popular areas but this is totally fine. We just want a change of scenery!

Are there any websites we could find some good deals on for these? I once overheard people about to board an Easyjet flight that were saying they'd managed to get cheap tickets for the flight the day before. I would not know where to find those! Would websites like Expedia, Trivago, etc offer good deals? I never seem to be able to find anything that good!

We are not fussed about the destination. It could be city/nature/North or East of Europe/UK,etc, and we would be happy to book everything literally the day before if this helps.

Last minute.com

Or secret hotels. Where you don'y know where you will be staying until the last minute, depending on availability, but are guaranteed a certain standard.

Google secret hotels and lots of sites come up.

Would you stay in a lodge rather than a hotel in the UK? If so keep an eye on Hoseasons they are good for UK lates. Flights you’d have to be really lucky to find a cheap last minute one in August to be honest, but Jet2 have some decent package prices and do short durations.

Thanks everyone! I will try these.
Yes, I would consider most forms of accommodation.... aside from camping 😉

Forgot to ask. Are we more likely to find a good deal at the last second or a week or two prior to departure?
