Day in London

I’ve just discovered that I we can get into St Pancras in under 90 on the train from my local station and I’d like to take the kids for a day out. (They are 6 and 9.) I have no idea what to do - there’s so much and so many expensive things! I’m guessing we’ll only have time to do a couple of things and get lunch - what would you recommend?

There's quite a lot to do in just the Kings Cross St Pancras area if you're tight for time. Some suggestions:

  • The fountains at Granary Square on a nice day, take a change of clothes.
  • The Postal Museum, book the train in advance.
  • Walk along the canal up to Camden Market. Maybe get lunch there. If you walk a bit further you'll get to Regents Park.

If they've learnt about the Great Fire of London at school, they might be interested in the excellent Musuem of London which is free and easily accessible from St Pancras. just hop on one of three tube trains eastbound to Barbican (only two stops along) and it's right there! It's a very interactive museum and always has loads for kids. From there it's an easy walk to St Paul's where you can catch the train to the V and A Museum of Childhood (Bethnal Green) which is also free and highly recommend.
Or, you could take the Piccadilly line south from St Pancras to Leicester Square to visit the largest ever Lego store and the M&M world. Leicester Square is right next to China Town and really close to Covent Garden (good street entertainment) and it's not too far from Trafalgar Square either.
Coram's Fields makes a nice change from museums. It's an amazing 7 acre playground and petting zoo really close to St Pancras.
