Does anyone know of a museum with an air raid shelter?

Because my DD keeps asking to see inside one.

One of our neighbours has an air raid shelter in her garden but despite some very blatant hinting she's not inviting us in. So, I'm on the hunt for a museum.

Does anyone know of one? We are in the South East.

THANKS!

theres Eden Camp in Yorkshire-quite a drive but well worth it.

hoxtonchick · 30/05/2007 21:54

imperial war museum. more than 1 i should think!

edam · 30/05/2007 21:54

Ask the Imperial War Museum? Capel Manor has one too - it's a gardening college north of London (Enfield way) but has gardens that are open to the public and there was an Anderson shelter last time I visited (don't think it was done out with full contents, though).

Hey HC, how the devil are you?!

lyrabelacqua · 30/05/2007 21:57

The Imperial War Museum has an interactive one where you can sit inside and experience a bombing raid. DS1 (4) loved it but DS2 (2) cried and clung to me because it was too scary.

Imperial War Museum! Doh! Lived in London all my life so why didn't I think of that!

Thanks!

The cabinet war rooms are brill - not exactly your average anderson shelter but soooooo cool. (they basically froze it the day Churchill left).

Meid have you been to Firepower at Woolwich? They might have one - I know there is a history of the Blitz exhibition coming up (8th June-1st July) so they might well build one for that - worth calling and asking.

And my garage was formerly an air-raid shelter, it still has a little cooker in the corner with a chimney, if you get desperate you could pop round!! I'm in SE London too.

Is your child in Year 3 by any chance, my DD is studying WW2 at school at the moment.

DrNortherner · 30/05/2007 22:30

Beamish in Northumberland but again rather a drive for you!

VerySensibleKbear · 30/05/2007 22:33

Also, just remembered - Erith Hospital's Xray unit is a massive Anderson shelter! Have a drive up there, you can park right in front of it!

edam · 30/05/2007 22:48

hello hc, all fine here too, email me!

Meid · 30/05/2007 23:01

Thanks CharlieCat I'm in North Kent. Where is the school air raid shelter?

KBear... I know you are not far from me (I've been following you and Bomper around the do-you do-you-not know each other conversations!).

I thought about Firepower but everyone I ask says its not up to much. I have to judge it for myself though.

DH and I had a debate just this week about the X Ray unit at Erith hospital wondering if it is an air raid shelter. He was in there having his toe xrayed.

She's in Year 1 and her fascination comes from the opening scene of Narnia. She's not as interested in the Lion Witch and Wardrobe bit... just the story of them being evacuated.

Docklands Museum in Docklands has one although not as exciting as Imperial War Museum. But also not as War obsessed and in entirely civilised surroundings where you can go for lunch at Pizza Express/ Browns/ Wagamamas afterwards.

lyrabelacqua · 30/05/2007 23:07

The Imperial War museum has a huge section on the evacuated children too, if she's interested in all that.

dolally · 30/05/2007 23:13

the London War Experience exhibition thingy.. can't remember what it's called but it's near the London Dungeon. It's got an air raid shelter with Blitz sound effects. My kids LOVED the whole exhibition, very realistic lighting and sound effects... they thought it was brill.

Skribble · 31/05/2007 00:24

Peoples Palace in Glasgow, bit far for you but they have an air raid sheleter you can sit in and the sound egffects are very realistic.

robinpud · 31/05/2007 00:37

Meid- At Dover there is a fab war museum thing the name of which completely eludes me but it was used during the war and is underground- not too far from you
