Science type places that I can get to on public transport

Dd1 is very into science and i'd like to take her and dd2 and possibly ds on a trip out to a science themed place.

Dd would love to go to the science museum in London, but the cost of getting there is well out of my reach even with entry being free.

We are in Brum so anywhere near there or accesible by train and not cost and arm and a leg would be great.

Oh but not Think Tank, have been and done that anxd wasn't too impressed.

Space Centre in Leicester - bit pricey though.

NuttyMuffins · 30/05/2007 20:25

Leicester Space centre? there is a train from brum to Leic

colditz · 30/05/2007 20:25

X post!

MerlinsBeard · 30/05/2007 20:26

manchester science and industry museum is supposed to be good and is free but i think your train fare would be ridiculous!

Kewcumber · 30/05/2007 20:28

can't you get really cheap bus fares to London some days?

WigWamBam · 30/05/2007 20:29

Snibston is well served by buses but it would take you several buses to get there from Sutton - or you could get the train to Leicester and then a bus out. It's not hugely expensive to get in.

Coventry Transport Museum would be easy to get to, but it's more automotive engineering than science. Lots of exhibits, though - and free.

colditz · 30/05/2007 20:30

train fare brum to leic is £7.90

colditz · 30/05/2007 20:31

Prabably take you about an hour to get there.

WigWamBam · 30/05/2007 20:32

Space Centre is expensive though - we went over Easter and it was £11 adult, £9 child.

colditz · 30/05/2007 20:37

Yowch!

didn't realise it was that dear!

NuttyMuffins · 30/05/2007 20:50

Thanks guys

Will work out all the possibles and see what they would prefer.

It won't be until summer hols anyway I don't think.

Chiltern railways do cheap fairs to London Marylebone from Birmingham Snow Hill. It would probably work out about the same as paying for the Space Centre if you get a railcard. And the London one is far superior to any other imho. Plus of course, you could go to the Natural History Museum on the same day and have a whole day out for just the train and tube fair, if you took a picnic.

The Leicester one is good but only takes an hour or two to go round (at most), whereas you could lose yourself all day quite happily in the London one methinks!
