Hi

We have booked a week in Split, Croatia in September. We've never been before so any advice on places to visit or general advice about the area would be most welcome! Is it worth hiring a car?
Thanks in advance Smile

It depends how old your family is and whether or not you could happily spend all day on the beach.
In the summer, you can get the morning ferry to Hvar and return in the evening. The only reliable year-round connection for an island day trip is the Split-Supetar and Split-Stari Grad car ferries.
Krka National Park is a spectacular panorama of lakes and waterfalls. The park is only about 1 1/2 hours from Split by car but public transport is not direct. Without your own wheels, I recommend taking an organized tour. The price is reasonable and you don't waste time on buses.
Only 15km from Split, the ancient fortress of Klis has unforgettable views from the top and Game of Thrones used it as the location for Meereen in the fourth season. It's reasonably accessible by bus.

Split is lovely - we had 4 days there last year. As well as Hvar, you can also get a ferry to Bol which has nice beaches & is underdeveloped. In Split the beach at Bacvice was recommended to us by our hotel as the most child friendly but it was pretty crowded and covered with plant debris which on first glance looks like shredded plastic - the beaches on the other side of the town going through the park were nicer & more private. Take beach shoes as they're all rocky. We did a boat trip around the peninsula which was pretty - there's quite a few of them & lots of ticket booths on the harbour front. We didn't do Krka national park as the tours did look relatively expensive & didn't include park entry but plenty of the tour shops & booths along the train/bus station road sell trips there.
