3 week holiday, primary school children, £10k budget, where should we go?

In 2 years I will have the chance to have a 3 week holiday over the summer. Normally we stick to Europe with 10 day holidays.
DC will be 4,8 and 12. Love outdoors and nature. DC1 has ADHD and possible autism, and doesn’t deal well with situations where there is little sleep or lots of new situations. This means the first day anywhere new is spent getting them used to the new place and setting boundaries.
Would love a holiday that we wouldn’t be able to have given the usual time constraint of 10 days or so.

Any ideas? I wondered about Canada, maybe a week in each of 3 places?

Have you considered a cruise? Then you would get to see lots of fabulous places but your surroundings would stay the same for your DS?

No I hadn’t. I think we would prefer to be exploring by ourselves rather than a big group, but will look into it.

I would suggest Orlando great place for 3 weeks as long as you stayed in a villa as a hotel would be terrible for 3 weeks.

Canada is a great idea. British Columbia is gorgeous, but a long way. You could fly much more quickly to Halifax (5 hours or so) and Nova Scotia, Cape Breton great for a family holiday.

We did a three week road trip in Canada for a special holiday. It was amazing.

Flew into Calgary, spent time in Banf and Jasper. Then traveled to Okanagan Valley (who knew Canada has a wine growing region!!). Fab lakeside apartment so did sunbathing, swimming, wine tasting. Then traveled via the Thompson river for some white water rafting and a bit of camping. Then on to Vancouver (which is beautiful). Flew home from Vancouver.

Some log drives and quite a few ‘new’ places to stay so our itinerary may not work for you but I can heartily recommend Canada. Especially Alberta or British Columbia.

Ffs - LONG drives not log drives!

Thanks folks. Orlando is definitely on the to do list but as I think you probably don’t need three weeks for it we might do that in a fortnight some other time.

Is my budget reasonable for either a Canada trip or a cruise?

Definitely doable for Canada.

Yellowstone!!

OP, I’m going to disagree with you over Orlando - I looked into it for our family holiday for this year and decided to save it for another time because I thought I couldn’t get round everything my family would want to do in just a fortnight, although I will confess we were looking at the whole of Florida. We wanted to see the Everglades, the Keys, Cape Canaverel, the shell beaches (Sanibel/Captiva,) and have time to experience them at a relaxed pace. Then we wanted to go to the theme parks too, but had trouble deciding between Disney and Universal. And which water park? By the time I had written out an itinerary of the most important places, I realised we were going to have to shoehorn 16 days of holiday into a 15 day gap. We are off to Mexico instead 😁

We went to Oregon. very similar to Canada in the outdoorsy sense of things and we all really enjoyed it. we also did a 3 week Canada trip and stayed 5 nights in 4 different places - Sechelt, Vancouver, Jasper and Golden. my kids really loved both of these holidays more than any other we have taken.

ArfArfBarf · 24/07/2018 14:53

Sorry to hijack but do you mind sharing some Oregon highlights mummymeister as we’re off there in a fortnight and I’ve basically done none of the research I planned to.

I've got two kids, one possible ASD and we did AI in Costa Rica last year and they both loved it via TUI. He loves AI as its the same and lots of choice. Loads of rainforest and animals, sloth, racoons, coati, gecko, pelican, toucan, monkeys etc, he loved ziplining and horseriding through the jungle.
