You can buy it from duty free at the airport.

Sorry I think I'm wrong. We didn't buy cigarettes but bought spirits

www.iatatravelcentre.com/IT-Italy-customs-currency-airport-tax-regulations-details.htm looks like a limit of 800 cigarettes for personal consumption

Maybe the OP has a very old Nokia Grin

Cigarette costs tend to be cheaper in Europe than the UK so it might better/cheaper to buy them in Italy. A quick google tells me a pack of 20 Marlboro lights are 5.20 euros in Italy.

Why are you so keen to shorten your life and risk cancer, copd, strokes, pvd and heart attacks, OP?
I recently retired as a doctor, and I found it so sad having to sedate frightened smokers for bronchoscopies to diagnose their lung cancer, or tell children that their mother had just died of a cigarette induced heart attack.
Why not use the holiday as a nice chance to ditch the cigarettes for good? Use all that saved money for some lovely treats while you’re away, or put it into a fund for an extra holiday?

Buy them here and pay your taxes in the UK. The NHS needs your money.

MongerTruffle · 22/07/2018 08:10

You are allowed to buy them at duty free, but you have to pay full price.
www.gov.uk/duty-free-goods/arrivals-from-eu-countries
Within the EU, there is no limit on how much alcohol and tobacco you can take, but you could be asked questions by customs if you bring more than 800 cigarettes.

I linked to the GOV.UK website but that applies to all EU member states.
