Austria - Salzburg & ? Recommendations please

Looking for recommendations for our summer break please , 2 adults + 16 yo. Probably 2/3 nights in Salzburg and then a week or so elsewhere. Looking for hotel with pool (indoor/outdoor would be nice) in a resort which has some quintessentially Austrian character, walks etc. Have skied there 20+ years ago and had the odd short break there with kids since, more often skiing and walking in other areas of the Alps, so a bit disorientated!

Have a look at this resort or any of the other Landal properties in Austria www.landal.com/parks/katschberg/in-and-around-the-park

Thank you. I'm not sure we will have a car so they may not be easily accessible and possibly too many families. Perhaps better to stay in a town/village?

Have a look ah saalbach/ hinterglemm area - lots of hotels and things to do. Don't know how you'd get there with no car but it's about 1 hour from Salzburg. Most of the hotels give you access to be cable cars etc via a joker card

How about Seefeld (Tirol)? I appreciate it's a couple of hours from Salzburg to Innsbruck but a really easy journey and Seefeld is situated on a lovely plateau with loads of hotels. Easy day trip (and lovely train journey) to Innsbruck. Alternatively train to Worgl and transfer to Alpbach or stay on the train a little further to Jenbach and transfer to Pertisau or Achenckirch.

We are staying in an air bnb in Austria next month. Have a look at the towns / villages around Wolfgangsee; St Wolfgang, St Gilgen and Strobl or Bad Ischl.

Thanks for the ideas. We spent a few days in Seefeld when interrailing but think it might be too far a transfer (unless we can fly out of Innsbruck perhaps...) . Needs to be somewhere large enough where we can eat out in evenings so wonder if Alpbach would be a bit too small? Any accommodation recommendations, have visions of sun terrace with pool, overlooking mountains! Some resorts seem to offer free lift passes which would be a bonus.

Zell am Zee also worth a look; think there's a bus from Salzburg and loads to do when you're there. Lots of hotels etc

Have put brain into gear! Try Schladming, perhaps here.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/07/2018 22:16

We stayed in Fuschl quite a few years ago which had a regular bus service to Salzburg. Might be a bit quiet, but St Wolgang and St Gilgen are in the next valley. All are lakeside towns

Aargh, still racked by indecision! No tour operators seem to offer multicentres online and there are relatively few anyway! Looking for somewhere nice to chill out after spending a couple of days in the city.

Just book the ones you want direct - we have and it's fine! Where have you narrows it down to?

LIZS · 29/07/2018 20:05

Torn between larger resorts like Zell or Kitzbuehel or a pretty village. So not much closer really! Packages seem limited and expensive.

Not that we are averse to booking independently.

Zell am See/Kaprun or Mayrhofen could be good - easy transport links since you say you’re not driving, and most accommodation will include a summer guest card which will give you access to the local (indooor and outdoor) pool. I don’t think the Salzkammergut region would be as good without a car.

Seefeld? I know you think it may be a bit far but is nice and various restaurants are an option for evening food/aperol spritzes! We've stayed at hotel Charlotte which has 2 bedroom suites, a pool (and llamas in the garden!). Also st gilgen on Wolfgang see is lovely - again a variety of restaurants to eat at. We stayed in an amazing rental from Homeaway on the lake with own pool which was one of the nicest houses I've ever stayed in, large pool own sauna etc. Hallstatt also good and Innsbruck.

Oops, posted too soon. Zell am See and surroundings are v v popular with Gulf state visitors which may mean they are more expensive/booked up than other areas in summer, just something to be aware of when booking independenly..
