Recommendations for October Holiday.

My OH has five days of holiday (so one week with his days off) to take before the end of the year, so we are thinking of taking a holiday during the October school holidays (we are in Scotland, so from the 5th October for two weeks).

We would be happy with UK (within about five hours drive of Edinburgh), or we would be happy to fly, max about 2 hours flight from either Edinburgh or Glasgow. Not bothered whether hot or cold, happy to hire a car, would rather self cater and self book rather than a package holiday, would rather somewhere scenic and out of the way than an 18-30's type destination, although we wouldn't mind a city if there was plenty to do.

We've been looking at Orkney, Skye, Iceland, but we're a bit out of ideas above and beyond that! We have recently visited Greece and York, so don't want to go back to those places this time. Can anyone recommend places to visit at that time of year?

How old are your DC?

Crete. Not too hot and the flights not too long. It depends what you want. October is hit and miss here.

They are 10 and 12. We're not really a laying on the beach sort of family. If we go to the beach it's to snorkel and swim, then sit whilst we dry off. We like walking, geocaching, museums, castles and things like that.

If you are not bothered about weather then North Wales could suit. Fabulous castles, beautiful coastline and loads of great self catering options.

I'd not thought of North Wales. I went to uni in Wales and OH and I visited North Wales years back, so it might be nice to revisit some of those old haunts.

Portugal?

Not sure of flight time but last October we flew to Naples from Edinburgh - stayed in Sorrento and did loads of sightseeing so Capri, Pompei and so forth then got high speed train to Rome spent a few days there and flew back from Romes. Great temperatures still warm but not too hot for sightseeing.

Yes, just looking at Portugal and Sorrento. OH and I have been to Sorrento before, but pre-kids, but I think they'd enjoy Pompeii and Herculaneum. The other place we've looked at this evening is Split or Dubrovnik in Croatia. Any thoughts on Croatia?

Croatia is brlliant. Loads to see and do, and very beautiful. If you are going for 2 weeks I would suggest a 2 centre holiday, and base yourself near Dubrovnik for a week and Split for another week. Bear in mind that you are likely to get rain wherever you go, so make sure you take the right clothes.

Look in the deals Section of jet2holidays and see what comes up. Costa Brava is around a 2 hour flight. You won't get further than that. Tossa de Mar has a castle and is nearish to Barcelona. Sea should be warm enough for snorkeling.

We had a great time in Valencia in February with our two kids and it's not a long flight from the UK - inexpensive too, good food, not particularly touristy, and the Museum of Arts and Sciences is fabulous and consists of several different museums and a a beautiful aquarium.
