3 adults (early to mid 20s), 2 veggies, going for 4 days at the end of August.

Any tips/ideas?

Well it will be hot, very hot so pick lots of places with aircon to wander around.

I really liked Madrid but Spain isn't very veggie friendly so it may not be the easiest place to eat out, though I expect others will know of good venues. Easy to get around, the metro is efficient.
We stayed in the main square opposite the Royal Palace which was fab. My highlight was the Sorolla Museum as I love his work but the Prado is amazing too. Enjoy!

Tapas for veggies is fairly easy

Tortilla
Patatas Bravas or allioli
Fried aubergine
Pimentos de padron
Spinach and chick peas
Pan con tomato
Manchego and membrillo

Probably loads more that I can't think of now. There's a tapas restaurant near us that does a group deal and I think, out of 15 dishes, 9 of them are vegetarian.

Hotel with a pool sounds like a good idea. We went to Seville when it was not supposed to be proper hot as it was early May, so didn't bother with a pool as all the hotels with pools were either booked up or much more expensive and Seville seemed quite expensive anyway, but it was August 40C+ hot in May and we really wished we had booked a hotel with a pool for an afternoon cool off.

Retiro park/gardens are lovely.

Thank you!

I speak small amounts of Spanish (A level) so hoping I can mostly get by. I’ve been to a few other areas of Spain but that was a few years ago and I haven’t practised for a while. I do try and use the local language when I can.

Any more ideas are very welcome Smile

There are good side trips from Madrid - e.g. Toledo, L' Escorial, Avila. All very doable as day trips, just get train from Atocha.
