Car seats abroad?

Car seats on holiday? We have a package holiday to Egypt booked. Our son will be 18 months old when we go so plenty of time to get sorted but I’m stressing. My mum has a belt fitted car seat which will still fit my son and is light and easy to transport so we will probably take that one as ours is a heavy isofix.

But I’m really confused about what you do on trips etc? As we can’t leave car seat in the taxi so do we carry it round the places we go to visit? We’re not hiring a car so that’s not an option but I’m so confused as to how this works!!

You can get trolleys to put the car seat on so you can drag it like a wheely suitcase. But that only really works if you are on pavements and it’s still a pain in the arse. I have a child who is still at the big car seat age (small babies are easy as you can put the infant seat on the pram frame, big kids are easy as there are loads of compact booster seats, it’s the inbetween that’s a nightmare) and I’m yet to find a solution; it’s either get a hire car or travel in the taxi without a seat. Although if anyone has a miraculous solution I haven’t thought of I’d love to hear it!

I'm not too concerned about the airport as if we take it I'm going to box and pack it within an inch of its life and stick it on a trolley lol. I'm just really confused about what the hell you do with it on trips at the other end?!

We really want to go on a few boat trips and there's some touristy trap type places and short of hiring a private guide with car I have no idea what we're supposed to do with the car seat when we get out of the taxi at the place we're visiting. My mum says not to bother and just put him on my knee because there's no alternative

That’s it exactly! As far as I see it you can either drag the seat around all day which even with a trolley probably isn’t an option in crowded markets or on a boat, you can get a hire car and drive yourself which I wouldn’t fancy in Egypt, you can hire a driver for the day if that’s affordable so the seat can stay in the car or you take a regular taxi and just put him on your lap.

Personally I’d agree with your mum and skip the seat due to lack of a viable alternative but only you can decide if you’re comfortable with that.
