We're off to Filey next week with our ds (5) and dd (2). We're not fussed about theme parks etc but would love to know of any hidden gems or places that really are worth the admission fee. Beaches will feature highly in our plans!

Whitby is great. North Yorks Railway. Dalby Forest (has good play area as well as great walking). Have fun!

Robin Hood's Bay. Second Whitby and NYM Railway.

Try entering Filey in www.IdeasForTheKids.com. If there's anything listed there, click on one of the attractions and then on the "nearby" tab and you will get anything else within 10 miles. Good luck!

We're going just down the coast to Bridlington, so will be watching with interest.

My mum lives near Filey and as a child I spent many happy summers playing cricket on the beach. Cobble Landing is a nice little place for an ice cream and a look at the lifeboat. (tho there is a small amusement arcade (where I gambled my first 2p))

Filey beach is nice, as is Scarborough beach (go to the North Bay as it's not so 'tacky' and the sand is nicer).

A walk up the hill to Scarborough Castle is lovely - there's a great playground and some strange stone seats (like the ones in Narnia )
