August is hurricane season in the Carribean. I find the Carribean great for relaxing and beaches but no so good on activities - depends what balance you want. I think Costa Rica is better but we like a lot of activities / wildlife and less chilling. Not hurricane season there, around 25 to 30C, about an hour of rain a day as their winter but generally fine. Activities include hot springs. ziplining through rainforest (see monkeys and toucans), rainforest (see sloths, monkeys etc), we cuddled a sloth, horseriding and waterslides through jungle and active volcanoes. We saw raccoons and coati at hotel. Kayaking and watersports too.

In Carribean been to Cuba and did swimming with dolphins but otherwise not that keen. Been to Martinique really beautiful lovely botantical gardens and beaches and rum places to visit but not an overwhelming amount of activities - did a day trip to St Lucia which seemed similar but more Americanised.

Thanks catandpanda, we think we have narrowed it down to barbados and someone else recommended mauritius which after a quick Google search seem to be nice in August.

We've been to Antigua and Cuba in August with 3 teenage dcs. Had brilliant holidays both times...weather was fine ( hot and humid, but didn't bother us )...occasionally a downpour for an hour in the afternoon but cleared up very quickly
On Antigua we chartered a yacht( The Jaberwocky) for the day and also took helicopter flight over Soufriere volcano....amazing experience
Snorkelling was great and beaches gorgeous ...water very clear
Shirley Heights on Sunday evening to watch sunset and hear steel drum bands
Stayed in AI hotel which had loads of water based activities
Cuba was also a beautiful island, so much wonderful music and dance...(although food a bit hit or miss) we stayed in Varadero( good AI hotel for the dcs) , but visited Havana ....full of classic 50's cars and architecture ...I'd like to return and do the less touristy areas though
Took a boat trip out to sea to swim with dolphins
Also been to St Kitts in October and had a day of tropical storm, otherwise very pleasant weather ....very tropical island with rainforest and plantations and fort, much less developed than other Caribbean islands ..hired a jeep ( they drive in the left ) and explored the island
You can do a trek through the rainforest ,went horseback riding on the beach

Thanks, we've actually turned all our plans upside down. We were going to Florida this August but have moved Florida to next August and have just booked Mauritius for this August so all my plans have gone out the window. If anyone has any handy tips for Mauritius that would be great help.

Have a lovely time in Mauritius, sounds amazing. Never been but people I know who went loved it.

I'm also a fellow headless chicken, off in 6 weeks to Australia and house purchase and new schools to find first. Grin

TripAdviser country forums are very good for travel advice.

Already found the trip advisor forums for Mauritius and picked up tips already. Good luck in Australia.
