Kidwelly

I've snagged a cheap holiday cottage outside Kidwelly, mainly chosen for the name. Now investigating further I'm worrying that the area might not be as fun-packed as hoped. Please can someone big it up for me? Going with two Dds aged 12 and 8 and a dog.

It will be lovely. Kidwelly has a fairly well preserved Castle, and there is pembrey (a big coastal park where I think they've got dry tobogganing). Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (Penclacwydd), is fairly close by.
Within an hour is Dinefwr Park/Castle (National Trust), Folly Farm, Pendine Sands.
How long are you going for?

Going for a week. Thanks so much, very reassuring! I like the sound of dry tobogganing. Any nice cafes in Kidwelly?

Ooh we've been to kidwelly
Where abouts r u staying? We stayed at tanylan farm.

It was really a base for exploring south wales and pembrokeshire. Folly farm is really good.
Tenby, saundersfoot beaches. Barafundle bay is beautiful.

We drove out most days and stayed around our cottage in the evenings, can't remember there being much to do on the doorstep. We were near a campsite so nipped to their pub sometimes and walked to the beach

Oh yes pembrey park is brilliant, just down the road. U can hire bikes and cycle the coastal path. There's lots to do there

sproutsandparsnips · 24/06/2018 10:51

As Sharptic says, if you go a bit further afield you've got all Pembrokeshire too.

Kidwelly is close to the National Botanic Garden which has an inspiring range of themed gardens, including the apothecary, bee garden, ice house, Japanese garden, Tropical Butterfly House and Aqualab where kids can explore a number of activities. My DC love the Dipping Pond. There's a good playground including some bits for older children like zip wire etc... There are a number of catering outlets and a performing arts centre. Look out for special family events on during the holidays. Last time we went there were water-walkers!
Gower Coast Adventures do high speed RIB rides and tours guided by professional qualified crew with excellent local knowledge. They're based at Oxwich Bay which isn't very far from Kidwelly. www.gowercoastadventures.co.uk
Llanelli WWT Wetland Centre is a great day out. There are lots of trails to explore, cycle hire, canoe safari, picnic areas, cafe, gift shop etc... We never get tired of looking at the flamingoes.
You can go pony trekking at Pemprey Park Riding Centre. An instructor will happily take you for a plod through the beautiful forest.
Parc Y Bocs is a lovely and fantastic farm shop and cafe.
The Gatehouse is also lovely and it's in the shadow of the castle. Good for light lunches or a relaxing coffee. Definitely the place to go for Welsh Rarebit!

www.discovercarmarthenshire.com

Lists everything that’s on in the area. There’s a boat going from ferryside which is just down the road over to Llansteffan in the summer, lovely fish and chips on the beach and a castle to explore. Rainy days you could go to the cinema, bowling and swimming in Carmarthen. I second the wetlands in Llanelli and Folly Farm also take a look at the National Trust site as Dinefwr has things going on.
