We are looking for somewhere that isn't in a main city (too hot and expensive). Can anyone recommend a smaller town or rural area that isn't too far in a taxi from the airport but is interesting enough to see around?

Thanks

Sicily?

Tuscany! Rent a house with a pool and enjoy swimming and relaxing; on other days go driving around visiting beautiful villages for food stocks, ice cream, knick knacks and soak up the history and culture.

You are spoilt for choice! My favourite places in Italy which are a bit off the beaten track for non-Italians are

Ferrara
Ischia (Forio)
Pouzzouli
Maiori
Trieste

These places are more popular with Italians and represent good value and without the British/ American tourists.

Florence. Can get a train to Pisa and Venice.
