Where to go in August? Just the two of us!

DC will be away for seven days so we have up to 5 days to go where we want.

This is the first time in 19 years we won't have DC.

DH hates heat, lying by a pool, and spending money. He likes "interesting"

I want to go to: New York, Rome and Barcelona, but have ruled them out because of the heat. Have done Paris several times. I plan to go to Amersterdam next year with DC.

So far we've got it down to...Berlin.

Stockholm hotels seem expensive, even though flights are very cheap.

So, cheap and cheerful in August, where DC wouldn't want to go because I'll feel guilty for not taking them

How about a cruise from Southampton to Norwegian fjords? Not too hot, cheap if you can get a deal as all food included. We paid £650 pp a couple of years ago on P&O. Personally I wouldn’t pick that line again - there are lots to choose from. Do your research. Good prices on vacations to go website- never book with a high street travel agent!

Ooh actually 5 days would only get you to Northern Europe! You need 7 for Norway

Glenluce Scotland, lodges at Whitecairn.

Our happy place.

Berlin is awesome and certainly very interesting. Grin They have an annual beer festival every August which is great fun but obviously that would depend on when you’re able to go (and, of course, if you like beer).

Last year we combined our Berlin beer festival trip with a visit to the Spreewald which is only a short distance away. There you’ll find beautiful spa hotels, rustic pubs and lovely landscapes, if that’s your thing.

Such holidays are going to be a thing of the past for us - 1st child on the way in Autumn. Therefore, I say enjoy! Wink

Berlin would be a great choice. It’s not particularly geared towards children, so you definitely wouldn’t need to feel guilty. Lots to do, nice weather in august, great food, and nice day trips to more greenery if you fancy. I love it there.

When hubby and I took our first holiday in years without kids we went to Porto in Portugal. Can thoroughly recommend it. Lots to explore including port tasting!

Won't Berlin be hot?

What about Iceland, but not cheap. But then none of the nordic countries are.

Ginger1982 · 31/05/2018 07:09

What about Boston, Washington or Toronto?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2018 18:19

Berlin is likely to be warm, but there are so many brilliant museums that it's easy to get out of the heat. Or you can jump on a train and be by a lakeside in half an hour.

I was going to suggest Iceland too. Some of the touristy bits are pricey eg Blue Lagoon but the general swimming baths are amazing and v cheap and views cost nothing!

I hadn't thought if a day trip out if Berlin. It sounds perfect!

Realistically, do we need to drive if going to Spreewald?
